About this file
This document is a Vendor Acknowledgement of K-Monel Heat Review issued by the federal government addressing quality control issues with nickel-copper-aluminum (K-Monel) material manufactured by Special Metals Corporation.
The document identifies eighty suspect heat numbers of K-Monel material from Special Metals Corporation that may have insufficient aluminum content and inconsistent yield strength. These heats were produced with non-homogeneous aluminum content due to process changes implemented in 1994 that altered aluminum addition procedures at the toe of the ingot. The suspect material shows aluminum concentration as low as 2.0 percent with yield strength potentially as low as 40,000 PSI, whereas QQ-N-286 specification requires 2.3 percent minimum aluminum content and 85,000 PSI minimum yield strength for 1-inch material. Vendors are required to review their records for in-stock and in-process K-Monel material from Special Metals Corporation matching the eighty suspect heat numbers listed in Table I and are prohibited from providing raw stock or finished products made from these suspect heats. If suspect heats are intended for use, vendors must contact the PHNS & IMF contracting officer for material adjudication. The document also establishes K-Monel raw stock requirements per QQ-N-286 Revision G with slow strain rate testing to be conducted by one of seven approved laboratories: Huntington Alloys, Metallurgical Consultants Inc., Naval Surface Warfare Center Caderock Division, Teledyne Allvac, Mannesmann Rohrenwerke, Westmoreland Mechanical Testing and Research Inc., or ThyssenKrupp VDM USA Inc.
