1. SCOPE

This report describes the results of our Geotechnical Investigation along Lake Louise Drive.

The purpose of our work was to complete a geotechnical investigation for the upcoming improvements to the Lake Louise Subdivision in the vicinity of Housing Units 823-830.

Our task was to determine soil and groundwater conditions and to present our opinions, conclusions, and recommendations for the proposed improvements.

2. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

Lake Louise Subdivision is a housing development on the United States Coast Guard base at Kodiak, Alaska. It is located approximately one mile northeast of the Kodiak airport, and about four miles southwest of the City of Kodiak. The immediate project vicinity consists of duplexes on both sides of Lake Louise Drive, with a lake (Lake Louise) south of the subdivision.

The improvements included in this project include repaving a portion of Lake Louise Drive, repaving some of the driveways, adding new paved parking areas, replacing underground fuel storage tanks with above-ground tanks, adding fencing and drainage improvements, and replacing decks and performing upgrades to the some of the buildings.

3. INVESTIGATION

A. Field Investigation

Ten exploratory holes were drilled in the project area at the locations shown in Figure

1. Three holes were located in Lake Louise Drive, and the remaining seven holes were located in side lawns between housing units on the south side of the street, near the sidewalk. Figures 2 through 11 show test-hole logs prepared from field and soil lab data. Figure 12 is the key to test-hole logs. The holes were drilled using a truck-mounted Mobile B-61 drill turning a hollow-stem auger, operated by Denali Drilling.

Samples were obtained for testing and identification purposes. Drilling and sampling was completed on September 24 and 25, 2013. All field work was completed under the observation of a registered professional engineer who visually classified the samples and logged the test holes in the field. All samples were field classified, placed in marked plastic bags, and returned to our laboratory for inspection, testing, and classification.

B. Laboratory Analysis

The laboratory testing program consisted of moisture contents (ASTM D 2216) and grain size analyses (ASTM D 422) of selected samples. These tests were completed in accordance to ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards. The results of the grain size distribution analyses are shown in Figures 13-19.

4. SITE AND SOIL CONDITIONS

A. Site and Surface Conditions

The project area generally slopes down from north to south, with Lake Louise being at the southern side of the subdivision. Lake Louise Drive runs generally east/west, with a high point in the middle and gentle slopes down in both directions. The subdivision was cut into a sideslope, resulting in the north boundary being in a cut condition and the southern edge appearing to be placed on fill material.

Buried lines supply electric power, cable TV, and telephone throughout the subdivision. Buried water and sewer mains run parallel to the street, with service lines connecting to each housing unit.

B. Subsurface Conditions

Soils encountered were generally silty gravels and sands. Soils beneath the road surface typically varied in fines content from 6% to nearly 12%. Soils beneath the lawn areas typically had fines content ranging from 15% to 25%, with some samples approaching 50%. Groundwater was not encountered while drilling.

5. DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Soils beneath Lake Louise Drive appear adequate to support the road surface. They will need recompacted after asphalt removal. Removing some gravel will be required to slightly increase asphalt thickness to 3”, and additional material may need removed if imported leveling course is required for fine grading.

Most driveway surfaces exhibit depressions formed where the front wheels of parked vehicles rest. It appears that subgrade support of the pavement is inadequate. This could be caused by either poor subgrade materials or inadequate compaction of disturbed areas near the buildings. Test holes were not completed in the driveways. We assume the material beneath the pavement will require removal and replacement. Any material left in place should be inspected by a qualified engineer to determine it will provide the needed support.

A subbase thickness of 18” should be provided beneath driveway and new parking areas to provide adequate support. Any imported material should contain less than 3% fines, and any reused material must contain less than 10% fines. All pavement foundation materials should be compacted to at least 95% of maximum density.

All grass, roots, and other organic materials must be removed prior to placing subbase materials, and a geotextile separation fabric should be placed between silty subgrade materials and the subbase layer.

Retaining walls will not be needed for this project.
