STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)

DMEA 19-9D6

Design and Installation of an Experiment Cart Drive upgrade

19 April 2019

Project Engineer or Contract Officer Representative: Mohammad Arshad, DMEA/MEBD, (916) 231-1603

1.0 SCOPE:

1.1 TITLE: Design and Installation of an Experiment Cart Drive upgrade.

1.2 APPLICABILITY: Science and Engineering Gamma Irradiation Test (SEGIT) Facility’s low dose irradiator needs new cart system.

1.3 BACKGROUND: The manual cart currently installed in the Low Dose Irradiator is not as accurate as the one in the High Dose Irradiator. ISO17025 certification officials have recommended replacement of the current cart with a new one similar to High Dose Irradiator Cart. New cart design shall be based on the current High Dose

Irradiator cart system.

1.4 PURPOSE: The purpose of this task is to design and install an experiment cart drive upgrade in the low dose irradiator.

2.0 REFERENCED GOVERNMENT PROVIDED RESOURCES:

2.1 GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS: None

2.2 OTHER DOCUMENTS: None

2.3 GOVERNMENT FURNISHED EQUIPMENT: DMEA will provide new and modified parts to support the

Low Dose experiment cart drive upgrade. The contractor shall use provided parts in the design of the cart upgrade.

[Note: If a part is not be used, the final decision shall be of the DMEA engineers.]

3.0 REQUIREMENTS:

3.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

3.1.1 RESERVED

3.2 PROGRAM MANAGEMENT: The contractor shall perform administrative, technical, financial management, during the course of this effort and shall maintain a status of their effort towards achieving the SOW objectives, including all technical activities and efforts, problems/deficiencies, impacts, and recommended solutions. (A001).

3.2.1 TECHNICAL INTERCHANGE MEETINGS (TIMs): The contractor shall conduct TIMs as necessary in the performance of this task. The TIM with the contractor shall be scheduled when there is need for technical interchange between the government and the contractor. The content of the meeting can include the discussion of any information that has impact upon the task activities, including documentation contents or format. (A002)

3.3 TASK REQUIREMENTS: The purpose of this task is to design, fabricate and install an experiment cart drive upgrade in the low dose irradiator

3.3.1 REQUIREMENT: DMEA requires a new cart system to accurately position test articles at desired locations in the Low Dose Irradiator. The system must be able to repeat the process with no errors in location accuracy.

3.3.2 Design: The contractor shall design the new cart system based on the existing cart system installed in the

High Dose Irradiator. DMEA engineers must review and approve the design before the system can be manufactured and installed. (A003)

a) The cart system must be able to accommodate existing dose enhancement chambers used during irradiation. Final height of the new cart not to exceed +0.1” of current height.

b) Cart system upgrade shall not require a separate computer for operation and must be standalone.

Initial programming if any via computer is acceptable, as long as DMEA can replicate programing if required.

c) The cart system shall have variable speed control for the movement of the cart.

d) Cart movement must be controlled with a joy stick or similar mechanism.

e) Cart system design must be based on government provided metric ball screw for the accurate movement of the cart inside the irradiator chamber. Chain drive mechanism shall not be acceptable.

f) Cart movement resolution / accuracy must be 0.1 mm.

g) Cart design must have automatic stopping mechanisms to stop the cart at either end without causing any damage to the irradiator or cart system.

h) System must incorporate a mechanical counter to accurately track movement of the cart.

i) Cart weight capacity must be at least 250 lbs. or greater.

j) All components incorporated in the design to be placed in the low dose chamber must be corrosion resistant.

k) Motor control shall be via a bidirectional joystick and speed selector switch incorporating low, medium and high speeds as on the existing high dose irradiator cart system. Cart speed must be variable from approximately 0.05 mm/sec. to 30 mm/sec. Joystick deflection shall control motor speed within the selected speed range.

3.3.3 Installation: The contractor shall perform the research and development, design and installation for DMEA’s desired Low Dose Device Experiment Cart Drive upgrade. The contractor shall provide the final design, fabrication and installation of the new Experiment Cart upgrade system on-site at DMEA. [Note: DMEA engineers will review and approve final design drawings before fabrication of the system can proceed.]

3.3.4 Installation: The contractor shall install the DMEA approved cart drive system and hand over a working cart drive system as per the requirements. There shall not be any excess radiation leakage around or through the new cart installation.

3.4 PROGRAM SUMMARY: None.
