About this file
This document contains information about horse use policies and restrictions at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. The National Park Service site encompasses over 6,000 acres and was established to protect natural and cultural resources, including one of the richest fossil deposits in the world from 34 million years ago. Though horse use is not mentioned in the establishing legislation, it has been allowed traditionally if it does not conflict with management responsibilities such as public health and safety, resource protection, avoiding user conflicts, and protecting wildlife. Horses are currently permitted to be ridden dispersedly as long as riders follow restrictions including paying entrance fees, prohibiting dogs, camping, hunting and target shooting, avoiding wildlife, restricting riding to dispersed areas only and not creating new trails, and prohibiting the collection of natural or cultural objects. The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of the Interior National Park Service Intermountain Region to print new waysides for Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.

In 1969 Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument was established. The monument encompasses over 6,000 acres of federal land and was established to protect natural and cultural resources.
Underneath the acreage lies of one the richest fossil deposits in the world. Massive redwood trees and an abundance of diverse, detailed insect and plant fossils reveal a very different Colorado 34 million years ago.
Though recreational activities such as horse use are not mentioned in the establishing legislation of the Monument, it has been a tradition to allow such uses as long as they don’t conflict with management responsibilities. These management responsibilities include providing for public health and safety, protection of the natural and cultural resources, avoiding conflict among visitor use activities, and protecting wildlife. At this time, we will continue to allow horse use in the Monument as long as we can meet these responsibilities. We ask for your help in allowing this use to continue by following the restrictions and regulations provided here.
