About this file
This document is a comprehensive Quad Chart presentation for Hill Industry Day, detailing multiple critical component procurement and reverse engineering opportunities across various Air Force aircraft and systems. The document covers potential acquisitions and repairs for components related to B-1 Lancer, B-52 Bomber, C-5 Galaxy, F-16 Fighting Falcon, T-38 Talon, ICBM Minuteman III, and various radar and electronic warfare systems, with a focus on addressing obsolescence and maintaining operational readiness.
Key highlights include reverse engineering and procurement efforts for items such as B-52 windshields (experiencing significant supply shortages), landing gear components for C-5 aircraft, circuit card assemblies for electronic countermeasure systems, and power management controls for F108 engines. The opportunities involve market research, source approval requests, and technical data package development, with most targeting fiscal years 2026-2030. Interested vendors are typically asked to submit capabilities statements, white papers, or source approval request (SAR) packages to specific Air Force workflow email addresses, with many opportunities emphasizing the need for sustainable alternative manufacturing sources to prevent potential equipment grounding or operational limitations.

No. 3 Pilot LH Windshield: Rev. Engineering Tinker AFB – AFLCMC
Additional Comments Problem Statement:
B-52 has experienced a common problem over the past several years, with the problem increasing significantly within the past seven months – not having serviceable replacement windows available from supply. B-52 windows are routinely evaluated while the aircraft is operating in the field and when the aircraft returns to Tinker AFB for Programmed Depot Maintenance (PDM). Windows #1, #2LH, #2RH, #3LH, #3RH, #4LH, #4RH, #5LH, and #5RH are electrically heated and constructed of two layers of laminated glass sandwiching a vinyl core. Replacement worthy structural defects commonly found include delamination between layers, vinyl core cracking, permanent vinyl core cloudiness, and glass pane cracking, scratching, and chipping. Contracts for new window deliveries have been allowed to go delinquent for years with the main manufacturer citing a variety of excuses.
This lack of contract delivery has come to the forefront now that supply has been all but depleted and forced B-52 engineering to inspect discrepant windows on a case-by-case basis to determine capability to fly as-is in order to avoid grounding aircraft. A sustainable alternative to get B-52 windows back on the shelf is imperative if the fleet is to continue to operate through 2050+.
A Technical Discussion will be scheduled at a later date.
