Executive Summary PQRS Ad Hoc Analysis PQ3659
Title: 2015 PQRS EPs by state
Report includes PQRS data from program year 2015, provider-level NPPES data, hospital-level rural/urban indicators, and a Medically Underserved Area finder file.
Purpose:
This is a 2015 version of QIO3560 and summarizes PQRS eligible professionals by state and selective provider type, including breakouts of EPs (with/without low volume providers) in Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs), rural areas, and small practices.
Definitions
Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs): An MUA finder file was provided that defined MUAs using either county, county subdivision, or census tract. However, EP location is only known according to zip codes, which have no direct mapping to county subdivisions or census tracts. To combine these sources, a zip code was considered a Medically Underserved Area if any part of it was contained in an MUA. Alternative matching methods exist and could significantly change results. This is used in Tables 2-2A, 4A1, 4A3, 5-5A, 6A1, and 6A3.
Rural: A rural/urban flag was not available at the EP-level. However, a hospital/facility-level rural/urban indicator is available from the SDOL database. This was matched to EP-level data using the EP's zip code from NPPES. For instance, if EP John Doe has a zip code of 12345, and a health care facility in zip 12345 is flagged as “Rural”, then EP John Doe is also designated as “Rural” since the EP and the facility share the same zip code. This is used in Tables 3-3A, 4A2-4A3, 5-5A, and 6A2-6A3.
Small practice: Indicates when the number of PQRS-eligible EPs in a given practice (defined by the practice's TIN) is less than or equal to 15. This is used in Tables 4-5A. The inclusion of 15 is new for the 2015 version.
-A subset of small practices containing less than 10 EPs was also requested. This is used in Tables 6A-6A3 since there is not a Table 6.
Low volume providers: Providers who billed less than or equal to $10,000 or saw less than or equal to 100 beneficiaries. Low volume providers are excluded in tables that contain A in the title.
Summary:
*All tables exclude certified nurse midwives, social workers, psychologists, dieticians, nutritionists, audiologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language therapists
