About this file
This document is a set of herbicide application standards issued by the Missouri Department of Conservation for timber stand improvement work at the Huzzah Conservation Area in Crawford County, Missouri. The project encompasses three timber stands totaling approximately 33 acres: Stand 12 (9.3 acres), Stand 13 (10.7 acres), and Stand 14 (13.0 acres). The contractor must perform herbicide applications on selected tree species including sugar maple, red maple, elm, black gum, and Carolina buckthorn using two primary methods: cut stump treatment for trees of any size and girdle (frill) treatment for stems nine inches in diameter or greater. Cut stump treatment involves applying herbicide directly to the cambium layer of exposed stems using a spray nozzle or squirt bottle, while girdle treatment requires chainsaw cuts that completely encircle the trunk to expose the cambium before herbicide application. Applications must occur year-round except during sap flow periods, and girdled trees must receive herbicide treatment within one hour of cutting.
The contractor must possess a valid Missouri Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator license and demonstrate compliance with the Missouri Pesticide Use Act. Acceptable herbicides are limited to triclopyr ester, picloram, and 2,4-D solution, and all applications must follow label instructions precisely. A noticeable dye must be added to the herbicide solution to enable spot-checking by Department representatives, who will conduct periodic inspections to ensure compliance with all standards. Application of herbicides to non-target species or areas is strictly prohibited. The contractor bears responsibility for ensuring proper flow rate regulation and consistent coverage while adhering to all safety and environmental protocols established by the state.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION
RECOMMENDED HERBICIDE STANDARDS
The contractor must abide by rules and regulations set forth in the Missouri Pesticide Use Act. The contractor must show proof of being a Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator in the state of Missouri.
All herbicide application methods including solution ingredients and measurements must be consistent with the label for the chosen herbicide. All herbicide applications requiring cutting must be made within one hour of cutting the stem. Application of herbicides to non-target species or areas is prohibited.
A noticeable dye must be mixed into the herbicide solution to allow for spot checking by the Missouri Department of Conservation. A department representative will periodically inspect work performed to ensure that all treatments have been conducted according to the standards set forth in this contract.
Use of herbicides is required on any girdled trees and on the stump of the following selected tree species: Herbicide shall be applied to the stumps of any sugar maple, red maple, elm, black gum, and Carolina buckthorn stems that are cut.
The following application methods and standards are to be used under this contract (check all that apply):
Cut Stump Treatment – for tree stumps of any size, apply with a spray nozzle or squirt bottle directly to the cambium layer of the exposed stem. It is not necessary to apply to the center or heartwood of the stump. The use of a flow rate regulator is required to ensure adequate and consistent coverage. Year-round application is suitable except during periods of sap flow for the target species.
Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, picloram & 2,4-D solution
Girdle (Frill) Treatment – for stems 9 inches in diameter or greater in size, use chainsaw or similar cutting tool to make cuts into the stem of the tree at a convenient height completely encircling the trunk. The cutting depth should expose the cambium portion of the stem so that the herbicide will be readily absorbed. Apply the herbicide to the cut girdle. See chosen herbicide label for directions on amount of herbicide to apply to girdle as they can vary by product. Application is year-round except during periods of sap flow for the target species.
Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, picloram & 2,4-D solution
