About this file

This is an assessment procedures document detailing the testing criteria for evaluating lightweight machine guns at the International Special Operations Forces (ISOF) 2025 Vendor Shoot event at the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). The document outlines specific procedures for measuring weapon weights and lengths both with and without suppressors, requiring weapons to be measured in their standard configuration including rail interface, carry handle, bipod, buttstock and barrel.

The document specifies four function fire tests that vendors must complete: Test #1 involves firing 20 rounds switching between semi-auto and full auto modes; Test #2 requires firing 80 rounds in 8-10 round bursts; Test #3 involves a continuous 50-round burst; and Test #4 measures muzzle velocity and rate of fire using 5-round bursts. All firing must be done from prone position using bipods, with ammunition belts provided by Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane personnel. The document includes detailed failure classification criteria, categorizing malfunctions into three classes based on time required to clear (Class I: under 10 seconds, Class II: 10 seconds to 10 minutes, Class III: over 10 minutes or requiring higher maintenance).

1 Attachment 2 - LMG-A ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

The guidance below identifies information and expectations for situational awareness for the International Special Operations Forces (ISOF) 2025 Vendor Shoot event at the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR).

1.1 Weights and Measures

1.1.1 Weights

Note: The below procedures are for information purposes only and are not indicative of how the weights and measures will be conducted in future.

1. Weigh the weapon IAW the following.

Note: It is not necessary to remove sling attachment points or like accessories. The intent is to focus on the weapon in its current state of maturity and not with optics, lasers, or other items which are not inherent to the weapon.

a. Configuration: Machine Gun with standard rail interface, carry handle, bipod attached, buttstock, and barrel (without suppressor).

b. Center the weapon on the scale

c. Weigh the weapon 3 times to ensure a consistent measurement is taken.

d. Record the measurement.

e. Repeat the process for the suppressed weapon.

i. If any alternative barrels, or other configurations are available to weigh, do so if it adds value and time allows.

1.1.2 Length

Note: The below procedures are for information purposes only and are not indicative of how the weights and measures will be conducted in future.

1. Measure the weapon IAW the following.

Note: If the buttstock has the ability to add spacers (not required), configure the weapon with the “standard” configuration the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) intends.

a. Configuration: Machine Gun with standard rail interface, carry handle, bipod attached, collapsed but not folded buttstock, and barrel (without suppressor).

b. Measure the weapon using a tape measure from back of buttstock to front of muzzle device.

c. Record the measurement.

d. Repeat the process for the suppressed weapon.

1.2 Function Fire

1.2.1 Function Fire Setup

All firing for this section of assessment will take place from the prone position with a bipod by vendor personnel. Ammunition belts will be distributed by Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane personnel at the time of the assessment. No modifications to the belts will be allowed and all vendors will receive the same sized belts.

1.2.2 Failure Criteria: Function Fires 1-4

Reference the following for failure classifications for respective assessment.

Failure classifications:

Class I: Failure (stoppage) that may be immediately clearable by the operator (to include charging the weapon or opening the feed tray cover) within 10 seconds or less, while following prescribed immediate-action procedures.

Class II: Failure (stoppage) that may be operator clearable and requires more than 10 seconds but not more than 10 minutes. Only the equipment and tools issued with the weapon may be used to clear the weapon if any tools are supplied IAW tool requirements.

Class III: Failure of a severe nature. The failure, 1) is operator correctable but requires more than 10 minutes; 2) operator cannot correct and requires assistance (no time limit); or 3) requires higher level of maintenance, otherwise authorized operator correction cannot be accomplished because of unavailability of necessary tools, equipment, or parts.

1.2.3 Function Fire #1

1. NSWC Crane Engineers will record malfunctions and any other anomalies that occur.

Note: The vendor will not be penalized if the weapon shoots more than 5 rounds during the burst, the intent is to see how the weapon operates when switching back and forth from semi-auto to full auto.

2. Vendors will load and fire a 20round belt IAW the following firing schedule:

a. 10 single shots, 1 second pause

b. Switch the weapon to full auto

c. Fire 1, 5-round burst

d. Switch the weapon back to semi-auto

e. Fire the remaining rounds in semi-auto, rapidly (no set cadence)

1.2.4 Function Fire #2

1. NSWC Crane Engineers will record malfunctions and any other anomalies that occur.

Note: The vendor will not be penalized if the weapon shoots less than or more than 8-10 rounds during the burst, but the intention is to see how the weapon operates during a normal firing sequence with this schedule.

2. Vendors will load and fire an 80-round belt IAW the following firing schedule:

a. 8-10 round bursts, 6 second pause

1.2.5 Function Fire #3

1. NSWC Crane Engineers will record malfunctions and any other anomalies that occur.

2. Vendors will load and fire a 50-round belt IAW the following firing schedule:

a. Fire 1, 50-round burst

*If a malfunction occurs during the 50-round burst, the vendor will perform immediate or remedial action (as necessary) and continue shooting.

1.2.6 Function Fire #4

1. NSWC Crane Engineers will record muzzle velocity, rate of fire, and malfunctions. The assessment team will also record any other anomalies that occur.

Note: The vendor will not be penalized if the weapon shoots less than or more than a 5-rounds during the burst, but the intention is to capture muzzle velocity and firing rate data.

2. Vendors will load and fire a 50-round belt IAW the following firing schedule:

a. Fire 5 round bursts at the assessment engineer’s discretion. (no set time frame to collect data)
