The washcloth must be constructed from 100 percent polyester terry microfiber (400 filament with 48 filaments warp per inch) warp knitted with polyester scrim, finished to dimensions of 12-1/4 inches by 12-1/4 inches (±1/8 inch) with firm selvage side edges and serged top and bottom rounded edges finishing 3/16 (±1/16) inch wide. The finished cloth must not present a dermal health hazard and shall be treated with a soil release finish. The product must be colored Brown 436 and match a government-provided standard shade sample.

Physical requirements include weight of 12 ± .50 ounces per square yard (per dozen), 12 warp yarns per inch and 15 weft yarns per inch, bursting strength of 90 psi minimum, and specific colorfastness standards for laundering (3-4 rating after 3 cycles), light exposure (3-4 rating after 40 hours), perspiration (3-4 rating for acid and alkaline), and crocking (3.5 rating minimum). The washcloth must not shrink or elongate more than 4.0 percent in either direction after five laundry cycles, achieve a wicking rate of 6 inches in 20 minutes, demonstrate dynamic absorption ratings of 75 initially and 73 after 5 launderings, and show soil release ratings of not less than "4" using AATCC Stain Release Replicas. Each washcloth requires a white nonwoven label containing item name, contractor name, contract number, fiber content, National Stock Number (NSN), and specific laundering instructions, plus individual barcode labeling with 13-digit NSN and 12-digit Universal Product Code (UPC). First article inspection and conformance inspection per ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 sampling procedures are required, with defects classified as major or minor based on Table III criteria including material defects, workmanship, labels, and cleanliness standards.

(see 6.3) in accordance with 4.2.

3.2 Recycled, recovered or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible, provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements, and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs.

3.3 Design. The finished dimensions of the washcloth shall be 12-1/4 inches by 12-1/4 inches

(± 1/8) inch. The side edges (border) shall be firm selvages and the top and bottom rounded edges shall be serged and shall finish 3/16 (± 1/16) inch wide. As an alternate all edges may be serged.

3.4 Materials.

3.4.1 Basic material. The basic material for the washcloth shall be a 100 percent polyester terry microfiber (400 filament – 48 filaments warp per inch) warp knitted with polyester scrim (see 6.5).

1/ Visual shade matching. The color and appearance of the finished cloth shall match the standard sample when viewed using AATCC Evaluation Procedure 9, with source simulating artificial daylight D75 illuminant with a color temperature of 7500 (+ 200)◦K illumination of 100 (+ 20) foot candles, and shall be a good match to the standard sample under incandescent lamplight at 2856 (+ 200)◦K, when tested as specified in 3.5.1.

2/ Machine cycle, permanent press; Wash temperature, 120 (±5)◦F; Tumble Dry, permanent press.

3/ Wicking Test Procedure. The wicking test procedure is used to determine the rate at which water will wick on test specimens suspended in water.

Apparatus

- Flask. A 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask shall be used.

- Straight Pins. Straight pins approximately 3 inches in length shall be used.

- Food Coloring. A food color shall be used that will be visible on the specimen to indicate the water level during testing.

Testing Procedure A sample size of 6 inches by 1 inch will be cut with the 6 inches cut measured in the Wale direction. A 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask shall be filled with 200 ml of colored water (food coloring used shall be a contrasting color to the cloth material to make the water level visible on the sample) NOTE: Fill as many flasks as specimens to be tested. The top edge of the sample will be pierced with a long straight pin (approximately 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch from top) and the sample then suspended from the top of the flask as shown in Figure 1.

After 15 minutes, remove the sample from the flask and measure water level on sample in inches and record. Values are reported as inches per minute.

4/ A Certificate of Compliance (COC) may be submitted for this requirement.

3.5 Color. The color of the washcloth shall be Brown 436 and shall match the standard sample

(see 6.2).

3.5.1 Visual shade matching. The color and appearance of the finished washcloth shall match the standard sample when tested as specified in 3.4.1.

4.2 First article inspection. The first article, submitted in accordance with 3.1, shall be inspected for compliance with design, workmanship and dimensional requirements. The presence of excessive defects, as defined by contract (see 6.2) or failure to pass any test shall be cause for rejection of the first article. The sample size shall be specified in the procurement document (see

6.2). The sample unit shall be one (1) washcloth and the lot size shall be expressed in washcloths.

4.3 Conformance inspection. Conformance inspection shall include shade and appearance of all components, finished measurements and defects specified in Table III. Sampling for inspection shall be performed in accordance with ANSI/ASQ Z1.4, as defined in the contract (see 6.2), except where otherwise indicated. The sample unit shall be one (1) washcloth and the lot size shall be expressed in units of washcloths.

4.4 Inspection conditions. In accordance with 4.1, components and end items shall be tested in accordance with all the requirements of referenced documents unless otherwise excluded, amended, modified, or qualified in this document or applicable procurement documents (see 6.2). The

Government reserves the right to inspect all components and end items to determine conformance to requirements.

4.4.1 End item visual examination. The washcloth shall be examined for the defects listed in

Table III. The lot size shall be expressed in units of washcloths. All cloth and washcloth defects shall be scored in accordance with Table III, which are clearly noticeable at normal viewing and affect serviceability and appearance of the washcloth. Material defects are defined in Section 1 of
