About this file
This is a Phase I application template for the Genesis Mission, a DOE interdisciplinary research initiative focused on accelerating scientific discovery and R&D workflows using artificial intelligence. The template is designed for small team Phase I applications addressing one of 21 major topic areas spanning advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, critical minerals, nuclear energy, fusion energy, quantum information science, microelectronics, data centers, autonomous laboratories, materials design, particle accelerators, physics, water and energy, grid operations, subsurface energy assets, HPC code development, scientific reasoning, cybersecurity for AI workflows, and AI applications in fluid flow. Applicants must select a specific focus area from the dropdown menu, which includes 87 defined subtopics across these domains.
The template requires applicants to provide project title, total budget, key investigator information with designation of lead principal investigator, expertise descriptions, and budget summaries by institution. A compute resource section captures estimated computing needs including allocation program source, machine type, estimated compute hours or other units, project number, and data storage requirements in terabytes. Additional fields address whether the project involves proprietary information, intellectual property, export-controlled code or data, and brief project description limited to 500 characters. The application is administered under the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049) by the Department of Energy's Office of Science in collaboration with the Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation, Office of Environmental Management, Office of Nuclear Energy, Office of Electricity, and Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Office. Phase I awards are intended for small teams, with provisions for Phase II large team applications to follow for successful Phase I recipients.
