About this file

This document is a Question and Answer (Q&A) sheet related to a Request for Quote (RFQ) package for 1 Diesel Standby Generator Set for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Southern Region. CAL FIRE is open to competitive bids from vendors offering generators comparable to Cummins, CAT, John Deere, or Kohler models. The agency does not want to limit competition by providing a specific model number. The generator must meet the detailed specifications outlined in the RFQ package. CAL FIRE has the necessary equipment and manpower to unload the generator at the delivery location, and finds the 45-week lead time acceptable. CAL FIRE's own technical staff will handle the installation of the generator.

Regarding pricing, CAL FIRE would consider an alternative Perkins model 1104D-E44TG1 60kW generator, as it is a subsidiary of CAT, one of the preferred brands. However, the alternative must still meet all the specifications detailed in the RFQ and be permitted by the local air quality standards.

Generator Q&A What is your preferred Brand and Model of Diesel Standy Generator Set

CAL FIRE is looking to purchase a Diesel Standby Generator Set that can meet the needs of our specifications, and are open to competitive bids from interested vendors. For vendors that are looking to potentially narrow down options, CAL FIRE will note that we are looking for generators that are comparable to the following: Cummins, CAT, John Deere, or Kohler.

Would you please provide the manufacturer part number of the item that you are looking for?

We appreciate this question, but to meet the needs of State procurement, we want to make sure that bids are fair and equal and cannot provide the specific identifier of any specific generator. This is to ensure we do our best to not limit competition. We would ask all potential bidders to please review the specifications and provide your bid that would meet the needs identified in the documentation. If there are additional specification questions or concerns, please let us know.

Do you have the necessary equipment to unload the generator at the delivery location? Would the vendor need to provide items such as ramps, plants, liftgates, etc.?

CAL FIRE does have that the required equipment and manpower at the delivery location to unload the generator from a delivery vehicle. Details, such as time and date of delivery, will be made the winning bidder.

Since there is no lead time specified in the paperwork, we would like to confirm if 45 weeks would be acceptable to build this generator? We are receiving this timeline from the manufacturers as to their own timetables.

CAL FIRE finds that the 45 week timetable acceptable. With recent purchases of similar items, we have become aware of the time frames and find that the 45 weeks does appear to be the industry norm at the moment.

Will CAL FIRE need assistance from the vendor with the installation of the standby generator?

CAL FIRE appreciates the vendors who have asked this question or somethings similar. CAL FIRE’s own Technical Services staffer will be conducting the installation, along with trained staff.

Would you be open to accept an alternative for the generator? A suggested model would be Perkins 1104D-E44TG1 60kW, Standby Powe Rating 1800 RPM.

In discussion with our Subject Matter Expert, we have noted that Perkins is a subsidiary of CAT, one of the comparable models mentioned in an earlier question. In this case, that would be an acceptable alternative, if this alternative generator meets the specifications detailed in the RFQ package, and can be permitted by the local air quality standards.
