About this file

This document outlines the specifications for a Gas Chromatograph (GC) to be used as an emergency response unit by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Office of Mines and Minerals Analytical Laboratory. The GC must be capable of quickly and continuously analyzing up to 20 samples per hour to detect permanent gases and light hydrocarbons in mine atmospheres. It must be linked to a computer for data analysis and storage, with easily replaceable or repairable components within each channel. The GC must be able to analyze four channels simultaneously using different column and carrier gas configurations to detect a range of compounds including methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and various hydrocarbons.

The document specifies detailed technical requirements for the GC, including injection volumes, oven temperature range, detector characteristics, and power and gas supply needs. The GC must also be transportable, weighing less than 40 lbs and occupying no more than 1.5 cubic feet. The procurement includes the GC unit, power supply, computer, software, connections, setup, and training. A trade-in discount is offered for a Varian 4900 micro GC.

Gas Chromatograph Specifications

This Gas Chromatograph(GC) will be used as an emergency response unit for the detection of permanent gases and light hydrocarbons in mine atmospheres. The GC must be fast enough to run 20 samples per hour and rugged enough to sustain this throughput continuously for several weeks. The GC unit should be linked to a computer for data analysis and storage.

Malfunctioning parts within the GC must be able to be quickly and easily be replaced or repaired independently of other components within each channel. Exact specifications are as follows:

Gas Chromatograph

Software selectable injection volumes of 1 µL to 10 µL

Backflush capable

Oven capable of temperatures of 30 to 180 degrees Celsius

Dual-channel four-filament micro thermal conductivity detector

Linear range of five orders of magnitude or greater

Less than one percent RSD repeatability

Minimum of twenty samples per hour throughput

Single injection for the determination of all compounds

Capable of injection by internal pump or by luer-lock syringe

Individual replaceable components (detector, injector, column, etc.) within each of the four channels

Simultaneous analysis of four channels:

Molesieve 5A with argon carrier

Moleseive 5A with helium carrier

Poraplot U with a helium carrier

Poraplot Q with a helium carrier

Compounds of Interest and Detection Ranges

Methane (10ppm/100%)

Carbon monoxide (10ppm/10%)

Carbon dioxide (10ppm/100%)

Oxygen (100ppm/30%)

Nitrogen (10ppm/100%)

Hydrogen (10ppm/10%)

Ethane (10ppm/15%)

Ethylene (10ppm/10%)

Acetylene (10ppm/10%)

Propane (10ppm/10%)

Propylene (10ppm/10%)

Argon (by calculation) (100ppm/5%)

Power and Gas Supply

Main power 110 volt AC, 60 Hz

Maximum 250W power consumption

Inlet connections for two external gas supplies

GC Controls and Data Analysis

A computer must be included and should control all GC functions

The computer performs data analysis and storage

GC software compatible with Microsoft Office

Transportability

Must be able to be transported by simply disconnecting the power and gas supply

(no internal disassembly or securing)

GC must weigh less than 40 lbs

Maximum size of GC of 1.5 cubic feet

These specifications are the absolute minimum requirements. The system should include the GC unit, power supply, a computer, software, all connections, setup of GC, and training of personnel. Trade-in discount for a Varian 4900 micro GC preferred.
