About this file

This document outlines plumbing issues in the galley of the US Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie and the related federal contract opportunity to address them. The existing galley plumbing system is in need of replacement as numerous temporary repairs have been made over time that have compromised drainage and created sanitation concerns. Specifically, the drain pipes are improperly supported resulting in wastewater not draining naturally, extreme hot water warps and expands PVC pipes causing leaks, and an unstable grease trap plumbing system causes backups when one piece of equipment drains. The related federal contract opportunity, solicitation number 70Z03023QCLEV0027 from the Department of Homeland Security Coast Guard, seeks to replace the galley plumbing to resolve the outlined issues and deficiencies.

USCG SECTOR SAULT SAINTE MARIE

GALLEY PLUMBING DISCREPENCIES

APRIL 2021

Existing conditions The plumbing in the galley is in need of replacement. Over time, numerous temporary repairs have been made. Each repair has corrected the immediate casualty, but has created significant efficiency and sanitary shortfalls of the plumbing system as a whole. The drain pipes are not properly supported and this has negated the ability for wastewater to drain naturally via the desired pipe angles. Extremely hot wastewater from sanitizing equipment causes the existing plastic PVC pipes to warp, further exacerbating the faulty drain angles. The warping and expansion of PVC pipe joints also result in numerous leaks. The existing drain fittings located at floor level have been shimmed to help compensate for the sagging, and is not IAW industry standards. The grease trap plumbing in place is unstable and unsupported. When one piece of equipment drains it causes wastewater backups in other equipment and drains. This creates significant sanitation concerns, as well as increasing galley and Engineering staff workload to correct and clean.
