About this file

This document appears to be technical specifications for a gyratory compactor procurement that must be recommended by one of five specified SuperPave regional centers, including Auburn University, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, University of Texas at Austin, or University of Nevada at Reno. The specifications detail requirements for an electromechanical gyratory compactor with specific capabilities for producing 150mm diameter hot mix asphalt specimens. Key requirements include: non-hydraulic operation, ability to compress specimens at 600 kPa while gyrating at 30 mrad, built-in extruder, specific dimensional constraints (500-800mm wide x 600-1000mm deep x 1100-1900mm high), weight requirements (300-400 kg), and various technical features like adjustable gyration speed, emergency stop switch, and internal data storage.

The equipment must include specific accessories such as 500 specimen protector paper discs, minimum of three 150mm diameter compaction molds, calibration equipment including a 5000 lb load ring and height blocks, line conditioner, and factory-installed cooling door kit. The compaction chamber must be completely enclosed with sufficient work area, include a viewing window, and feature a self-aligning ram and mold carriage assembly. The unit must have USB or Ethernet connectivity and be capable of storing data for at least 20 tests.

Text version

The gyratory compactor shall be the newest model at the time of purchase with an electromechanical compactor with a ram and ram heads having a minimum Rockwell hardness of C48. The gyratory compactor shall be non-hydraulic and capable of producing 150 mm (+/-0.1 mm) diameter hot mix asphalt specimens between 60 and 170 mm in height by compressing the specimen at 600 kPa (+/- 18kPa) while gyrating the specimen 30 +/- .35 mrad (1.16 degrees +/- 0.02 degrees)) and shall record specimen’s height to the nearest 0.1 mm (minimum precision 0.1 mm) every gyration (at least once per gyration) during compaction. The compactor shall have a built-in extruder. The compactor shall be mounted on swivel castors or like devices to insure compactor mobility within the laboratory. The compactor shall be:

• Min. 500- Max.800 mm wide x Min.600- Max.1000 mm deep x Min.1100- Max.1900 mm high

• Minimum of Approximately 300 kg – maximum 400 kg

The Compaction Chamber

• Must be completely enclosed with sufficient work area for the mold to be charged, placed into the compaction chamber, and extruded without being lifted.

• Compaction chamber must have a window for viewing through the door.

• Compaction chamber must have an emergency stop switch.

• Compaction chamber must have a self-aligning ram and mold carriage assembly.

• The speed of gyration must be adjustable from a minimum 20 to maximum 60rpm, with a minimum 30 ± 0.5 gyrations per minute and held constant during gyration of the specimen.

• The compactor must compact a specimen from a minimum of one to 999 gyrations, set by the operator, with automatic shutoff after reaching the specified number of gyrations.

• Consolidation pressure must be applied by means of an electromechanical screw ram.

• 500 specimen protector paper discs (150 mm diameter).

• Minimum of three (3) 150 mm diameter compaction molds (with bottom and top plates as required for each mold).

• Internal data storage (minimum of 20 tests) that records the specimen height of each gyration.

• USB port or Ethernet port capabilities.

• Calibration equipment to include minimum 5000 lb load ring and (4) height blocks (with certification) to verify force and height

• Line conditioner

• Cooling door kit – installed at factory

The bid gyratory compactor shall have been recommended in writing by one of the following SuperPave regional centers:

Auburn University (NCAT), Auburn, Alabama

Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pennsylvania

Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas.

University of Nevada at Reno, Reno, Nevada
