Technical Specifications

1.0 Introduction

The U.S. Geological Survey, Denver Library has a requirement to convert Library owned, steel cantilever shelving into a high-density, mobile shelving system. This procurement is for the fabrication and installation of mechanical assist, mobile shelving system components and installation services to convert static steel cantilever shelving units into a mobile shelving system with moveable aisles.

1.1 Background

As part of nation-wide space efficiencies and consolidation effort by the USGS Libraries Program, the library will move into a remodeled space of 18,250 square feet on the 1st floor within Building 41 on the Denver Federal Center.

Design plans for the new library facility call for conversion of library owned, steel shelving into a mobile shelving system to maximize space utilization. The mobile shelving system will house active collections and be available for use by both staff and the public; therefore the library requires a reliable system designed and constructed for frequent use, ease of movement, and patron safety. As a permanent installation to the library building, the mobile shelving system must be durable, operate in a smooth and even manner to minimize wear on components, and maintain integrity of alignment over the course of many years.

1.2 Scope

Work to be performed includes fabrication and installation of decking, rails, carriages, face-panels, and installation of Government furnished steel cantilever shelving onto mobile carriages to form a complete mobile shelving system that optimizes library shelving capacity within the defined area designated on the approved architectural furniture plan.

Disassembly and transport of owner-furnished shelving to the installation site is not required under this contract.

Reload of library materials is not required under this contract.

The contractor shall supply all supervision, labor, materials, tools, equipment, supplies, and expertise to perform the installation of mechanical assist, high-density mobile shelving. The work shall be coordinated with USGS, General Services Administration (GSA), and appropriately sequenced with the library construction project.

The Contractor is responsible for compliance of all products and installation with all applicable state, local and federal building codes, local ordinances and regulations.

1.2.1 Location

4.0 High Density, Mobile Shelving System Technical Specifications

4.1 Related Work, Not Furnished

A. Base floor capable of supporting dead and live rolling loads of mobile shelving loaded with library book collections.

B. Finish floor covering materials and installation on raised floors and ramps within mobile shelving system footprint. Coordination of finish flooring installation by others after floor and rail installation is required.

4.2 System Description

A. High-Density, Mobile Shelving System: Consisting of track-guided carriages with owner furnished shelving mounted to carriages to form a system with moveable aisles for the purpose of increasing library shelving within a given space. System design permits access to any single aisle by manually moving units using an operating wheel until the desired aisle is opened.

B. Storage: System shall be designed to maximize rows of carriages, use of double-faced shelving sections, and total storage within established dimensions of installation area.

Single-faced shelving may be used as needed along perimeter walls.

C. Carriages: The carriage system shall be designed for maximum strength and rigidity, with precision machined steel wheels riding on steel rails which are leveled and surface mounted to the floor. Carriages shall fit existing shelving and have a carriage lip on the carriage face to form a recessed housing for connection and alignment of shelving units. Rails types, lengths, and spacing must be selected to suit installation and ensure smooth operation of mobile storage units during travel.

D. Movement Controls: Triple arm operating wheels with rotating hand knobs shall be provided on the accessible (drive) ends of shelf units. Turning the handle transmits power through chain drive to drive wheels on each carriage. Operating wheel is centered on the end panel, with placement height allowing a minimum of one operation knob per carriage to be within ADA reach guidelines at all times.

E. Drive System: The system shall have a mechanically assisted direct drive which drives all wheels on one side of the carriage. The system shall exhibit smooth, parallel movement of the carriage frame along the total length of travel, even with unbalanced loads. The drive system shall be designed to ensure there is no looseness in the assembly, play in the drive handle, and that carriages will stop without drifting. The system shall have gearing ratio calculated and designed for ease of operation and appropriate to system size and anticipated weight load.

F. Face Panels: System shall have a supported face panel at the end of each accessible (drive) aisle.

G. Safety Features:

1. A user activated safety locking mechanism shall be provided at every carriage control to prevent unintentional carriage movement.

2. System shall have a visual indicator that carriages are in a locked or unlocked mode.

3. Both sides of each moveable carriage shall have a toe-level mechanical safety sweep system. The carriage(s) shall stop when sweep is depressed at any location along the leading edge of the sweep surface. Activated safety sweep shall engage braking mechanism to protect occupants, library materials, and carriage system.

Mechanical safety sweep shall automatically reset to enable mobile system users to safely back carriages away from aisle obstructions simply by reversing the direction of the rotating handle. Safety sweep shall require no electrical power or batteries to operate.

4. System shall have built-in, anti-tip rails.

H. Required Accessories:

1. Carriage Lock: Provide 1 waist-high carriage lock to secure materials within a selected aisle of the mobile storage system.

2. Face-Panel Card Holders: Provide 2 card holders for each face panel, sized at 3 x5 for purpose of labeling stacks.
