Great Lakes Science Center South Wing Renovation
Statement of Work
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) requires renovation of its Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC), located at 1451 Green Road in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
I. SCOPE OF WORK
GLSC has a requirement to renovate the facility’s South Wing located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The South Wing is located on the ground and first floors. Based on the identified space shortcomings of the facility, renovation alternatives were developed to create more suitable and functional office and support spaces within the South Wing. GLSC has compiled design drawings for the intended renovation. The space profile includes specific office requirements and integrated conference and library support facility.
Renovation and consolidation of functional spaces within the South Wing of the GLSC are intended to address the following: comply with applicable code requirements; reutilize the function of existing conference space as an integrated new office area; reutilize existing library space as a fully functional conference room with high tech audio/visual media equipment; address environmental safety; increase worker comfort by enhancing workplace ergonomics and flexibility of spaces.
II. BACKGROUND
The GLSC has a requirement to renovate the South Wing of the building. The South Wing requiring renovation is located on the ground and first floors and measures approximately 4000 sq. ft. The research facility was constructed in 1964, over time the Center’s mission and research has changed numerous times. This work of the Center staff requires safe, functional, and efficient work spaces for the over 60 people working within the building.
The existing design and condition of office and meeting space within the building are not adequate to support the needs of Center staff, as well as staff from the Midwest Region (MWR). Therefore, a need exists to renovate three specific areas within the building. The South Wing requiring renovation has been used for office space, storage, conference room, mail room, and library space.
III. PROJECT SCOPE
The requirement is to renovate the facility to meet the needs of the GLSC within the budget available. The contractor shall perform each area of the renovation in close coordination with the USGS team, including Contracting Officer’s Representative and technical representatives. The completed project shall meet all applicable codes, create a user friendly and safe work environment, and provide a new office work space for the MWR staff and new state of the art conference room.
The contractor shall be required to field verify any and all measurements, information, and design criteria provided herein. If any of the areas designated for renovation require changes to the drawings provided herein, conceptual drawings shall be required for approval by the USGS team before the related work is performed.
Submittals, shop drawings, product data and other supporting documentation shall require approval by USGS. All parties are responsible for value engineering throughout the project. As-built drawings shall be provided after completion of construction.
Quick and efficient renovation of these spaces will be critical to prevent disruption of mission-critical activities within the building. Close coordination will need to occur between the contractor, GLSC staff, and MWR staff to ensure that enough space is available at any given time to maintain daily operations.
The project involves three separate areas of the South Wing as follows:
Area 1: Library/High Tech Conference – Ground Floor
BASE ITEM 1: This area covers approximately 1375 square feet (rooms G13 and G15). In addition to housing books, this space currently contains an office, an open workstation, and several temporary drop-in stations. This area shall be renovated to maximize functionality of a high tech conference/meeting space. A rough draft layout is provided herein.
Library redesign
1. Remove two interior walls and furnishings that create an office in G13.
2. Add egress door to outside, as indicated on drawing.
3. Remove and dispose of existing free standing book shelves.
4. Repair and paint walls.
5. Replace carpet.
6. Relocate library shelving and install new book shelves along walls.
7. Update the lighting to allow dimming by the screen on east wall, add electrical outlets in floor).

Concept – library shelves along wall Conference Space With the library renovation, the conference space shall allow seating for 40-50 persons. Contractor shall space plan, furnish, and install furnishings required to support a variety of center-wide meetings and shall include conference room furniture and seating, audio/visual equipment, and telecommunications. The Conference room shall include the appropriate electrical and data wiring to allow for the installation of a digital video projector, automated wall mounted screen(s), network connections and conference phone.
Conference room audio/visual system requirements:
1. Sound - a sound system is needed to provide speakers (in the ceiling) that can flexibly produce sound from at least two sources: 1) computer sound output, and 2) speaker phone output. The sound system will also be capable of picking up voice communications from anywhere in the room and feeding it across the conference phone line.
2. Video Projection - a retractable ceiling mount screen is needed on the South and/or East end of the room. A digital video projector and mount is needed to project to one and/or both screens. The video projector mount could be moved from the current conference room into the newly redesigned room.
3. Sub-floor telecommunications/network power connections - One or more subfloor connection panels are needed to provide flush mount connections: 1) at the presenter’s location with video projection, wired network connection, and two (2) wired phone connections, and 2) 4-8 flush mount power connections for participants.
4. Video Conferencing - a system compliant with the USGS system at the central offices.
