About this file

This is an information sheet providing guidance on two key federal grant system changes: the transition from DUNS Number to Unique Entity ID (UEI) and new login requirements for Grants.gov. As of April 4, 2022, the U.S. government requires entities to use a 12-character UEI assigned through SAM.gov instead of DUNS numbers for federal business. The UEI is now visible within both SAM.gov and Grants.gov user profiles, accessible through the My Account section under Manage Profiles.

The document also details new login requirements for non-federal Grants.gov users, who must now sign in using Login.gov credentials. The process requires users to link their Grants.gov and Login.gov accounts through a one-time procedure where they click the Login.gov button, complete Login.gov authentication using their email and password, then log into Grants.gov to finalize the account linking. For subsequent logins, users only need to use their Login.gov credentials via the Login.gov button on Grants.gov.

UNIQUE ENTITY ID

• On April 4, 2022, the U.S. government switched from using the DUNS Number to a new Unique Entity ID (SAM), also known as a UEI.

• What is a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI)?

• A Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) is a unique number assigned to all entities (public and private companies, individuals, institutions, or organizations) who register to do business with the federal government. (U.S. General Services Administration).

UEI numbers are obtained from www.sam.gov. The UEI is a 12-character unique number assigned to all entities (public and private companies, individuals, institutions, or organizations) who must register to do business with the federal government in SAM.

• Applicant users who have registered with the System for Award Management (SAM) are now seeing their Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) within Grants.gov.

• Grants.gov now retrieves the UEI from SAM, and all users who have registered with SAM are now seeing their UEI when they log into Grants.gov.

• The UEI is assigned by and viewable within SAM, but Grants.gov users can also find it listed under their organization profile.

1. Log into your Grants.gov account.

2. Click on the My Account link at the top of the page.

3. Click on the Manage Profiles tab on the next screen.

4. Look under the UEI column header for the UEI for each profile that is registered with SAM.

LOGGING INTO GRANTS.GOV

• Another change is that to log into grants.gov non-federal users will be required to sign in to Grants.gov with Login.gov credentials.

• The process for linking Grants.gov and Login.gov accounts is simple. Here are the steps:

• Click the Login.gov button on the Grants.gov login screen.

• Complete the login process on Login.gov using your Login.gov username

(an email address) and password.

• You will then be directed back to Grants.gov to log in with your Grants.gov username and password. This will complete the account linking process.

• The next time you return to Grants.gov, just click on the Login.gov button and enter your Login.gov account username (an email address) and password.
