SCOPE OF WORK
FWC 26/27-
NONNATIVE LIZARD CONTROL
PURPOSE
Nonnative lizard species, in particular green iguanas (Iguana iguana), spiny-tailed iguanas (Ctenosaura species), and Argentine black and white tegus (Salvator merinae) pose a threat to the ecology, infrastructure, and economy of the State of Florida. For this reason, they are considered invasive species. Populations of green and spiny-tailed iguanas have increased in southern Florida in recent years and continue to cause adverse impact to native ecosystems, infrastructure, and property where they are established. They can impact conservation lands by competing with native species for food and burrows, eating plants used to restore conservation lands, and damaging established plants by burrowing into the root system making them susceptible to toppling and death. Argentine black and white tegu populations have also increased. In Florida, tegus are mostly active from February through October before going into winter brumation, approximately from November through January. Tegus have been documented eating frogs, toads, snakes, lizards, gopher tortoises, birds, small mammals, insects, spiders, vertebrate eggs (alligator and freshwater turtle), and fruits.
The Wildlife Impact Management Section (WIM) of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (“Commission” or “FWC”) is charged with managing nonnative fish and wildlife issues in Florida. This purview includes conducting control efforts for priority species and collecting data on nonnative species distribution and natural history that can be used to develop management strategies for nonnative fish and wildlife. Support services are required; the FWC intends to financially support a proposal that will implement an effective plan to remove green iguanas, spiny-tailed iguanas, and Argentine black and white tegus from southern Florida’s public lands. Furthermore, proposals must demonstrate a commitment to the development and implementation of innovative technologies and techniques, as approved by the FWC, to advance the management of nonnative lizards including but not limited to the use of an artificial intelligence-enabled platform for statewide detection and/or removal of nonnative lizards.
