About this file
This document is a reference chart depicting the radio frequency bands allocated to support aviation in the United States, current as of February 2021. The chart is produced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in coordination with Spectrum Engineering and is provided for informational purposes only, with a disclaimer that not all bands are exclusive to aviation and users should consult the National Table of Frequency Allocations for comprehensive details.
The chart organizes frequency allocations across three primary functional categories: Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance. Communication bands range from 190 kHz to 137 MHz and include aeronautical radionavigation (non-directional beacons), aeronautical mobile services for high-frequency communications and air-ground air traffic control, and data communications. Navigation bands span from 960 MHz to 30 GHz and encompass distance measuring equipment, VOR systems, GPS (L1, L2, and L5), instrument landing system components, and unmanned aircraft system control links. Surveillance bands cover frequencies from 960 MHz to 33.4 GHz and include radar systems such as ATCRBS Mode S, airborne radar, precision approach radar, and detect-and-avoid radar for unmanned aircraft. The chart identifies several bands designated as Aeronautical Advisory Group Bands and notes that two FAA radio systems in the 1780–1850 MHz range are currently being vacated. Additional allocations support meteorological aids, mobile satellite services, and fixed satellite services essential to aviation operations.
