About this file
This is a fish food formulation specification document for the Jake Wolf Fish Hatchery and Little Grassy Fish Hatchery in Illinois. The document details requirements for high-quality pelleted fish food, including starter and grower diets, formulated for Rainbow Trout (90,000), Brown Trout (175,000), Channel Catfish (800,000), and Blue Catfish (80,000). The feed specifications include various sizes ranging from starter feed (#0 .3-.6mm to #2 .8-1.2mm), extruded sinking fry food (1.0 and 2.0mm), extruded floating feed (1.5 and 2.5mm), and larger sizes for fingerlings in both sinking (3, 4, and 6mm) and floating (3.5 and 5.5mm) varieties. Deliveries will be made in multiple shipments throughout the year, with two shipments to Jake Wolf Fish Hatchery and three shipments to Little Grassy Fish Hatchery.
The nutritional requirements vary by feed size, with starter feed requiring minimum 52% crude protein and 16% crude fat, fry food requiring minimum 45% crude protein and 16% crude fat, fingerling food requiring minimum 40% crude protein and 12% crude fat for sinking varieties, and 32% crude protein and 6% crude fat for floating varieties. All feed must include essential vitamins A, D, B6, B12, K, and Folic Acid. The feed must be packaged in 50-pound bags (40-lb bags acceptable for extruded floating feed larger than 1.5mm) and guaranteed for twelve months from manufacture when properly stored.

Fish Food Formulation *Slight deviations are allowed in feed sizes as listed. Up to a .2mm deviation will be allowed for feed sizes under and up to 2m. Up to a .3mm deviation will be allowed for feed sizes above 2m.
High quality pelleted fish food, starter and grower diets formulated for the accelerated production of Rainbow Trout (90,000), Brown Trout (175,000), Channel Catfish (800,000), and Blue Catfish (80,000). This feed includes a nutrient-rich crumbled starter feed, extruded sinking salmon feed and extruded floating feed that is easily digestible. Fish meal will provide the primary protein source that trout and catfish species can grow most efficiently on. Sizes for starter feed include #0 (.3-.6mm), #1 (.5-.8mm), and #2 (.8-1.2mm). Sizes for extruded sinking fry food are 1.0 and 2.0 mm and extruded floating are 1.5 and 2.5 mm. Larger sizes of extruded sinking (3, 4, and 6 mm) and extruded floating (3.5 and 5.5 mm) are needed for rearing trout and catfish fingerlings, respectively.
The nutritional content of the feed should be guaranteed for at least twelve months from the date of manufacture when stored in a cool, dry location and must be packaged in 50-pound bags (40-lb bags are acceptable for the extruded floating feed larger than 1.5 mm). Fish food must be provided in a wide variety of sizes listed above and is essential for the intensive culture of cold and warm water fish species reared at Jake Wolf Fish Hatchery and Little Grassy.
Starter Fish food, extruded crumbles, including sizes #0 (.3-.6mm), #1 (.5-.8mm), and #2 (.8-1.2mm) must have at minimum 52% crude protein, minimum 16% crude fat, 9% moisture, maximum 3% crude fiber, minimum 1.2% phosphorus, maximum 12% ash and have digestible energy ratio (MJ/KG) of 18.2. Additional ingredients should include Vitamins A, D, B6, B12, K, and Folic Acid to promote fish health.
Extruded pelleted fry fish food including sizes 1.0 mm sinking, 1.5 mm floating, 2.0 mm sinking, and 2.5 mm floating must have fish meal as no less than the third ingredient and have at minimum 45% crude protein, minimum 16% crude fat, 9% moisture, maximum 3% crude fiber, minimum 1.0% phosphorus, maximum 12% ash and have digestible energy ratio (MJ/KG) of 17.1. Additional ingredients should include Vitamins A, D, B6, B12, K, and Folic Acid to promote fish health.
Extruded pelleted fingerling fish food including sizes 3.0 mm sinking and 4.0 mm sinking must have fish meal as one of its top 10 ingredients and have at minimum 40% crude protein, minimum 12% crude fat, 9% moisture, maximum 3% crude fiber, minimum 1.0% phosphorus, 12% ash and have digestible energy ratio (MJ/KG) of 14.6. Additional ingredients should include Vitamins A, D, B6, B12, K, and Folic Acid to promote fish health.
Extruded pelleted fingerling fish food including sizes 3.5 mm floating, 5.5 mm floating must have at minimum 32% crude protein, minimum 6% crude fat, 9% moisture, maximum 5% crude fiber, maximum 10% ash and have digestible energy ratio (MJ/KG) of 11.5. Additional ingredients should include Vitamins A, D, B6, B12, K, and Folic Acid to promote fish health.
