About this file

This is a project fact sheet issued by the Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) describing the Bridge 284.2 Rehabilitation Project, a comprehensive infrastructure restoration effort for a 914-foot steel bridge spanning Hurricane Gulch at ARRC milepost 284.2, located approximately 60 miles south of Denali. The project scope encompasses targeted repair and rehabilitation of aging components, including rehabilitation of the 384-foot deck arch span, realignment or replacement of expansion bearings at piers 2 and 5, repair of spalling concrete at existing foundations, installation of maintenance and inspection platforms, securing of piers 3 and 4 into existing slopes with rock bolt anchors, stabilization of the south canyon wall to mitigate future erosion, and stabilization of the eroding channel along the southwest corner of abutment 1. Preliminary studies, environmental reviews, design, and permitting commenced in summer 2022, with the project currently 30% designed. Project construction is scheduled to be bid in the first quarter of 2025, with construction commencing in the third quarter of 2025 and continuing through the third quarter of 2026, with completion targeted by the end of 2026. Environmental review documentation is being prepared to meet National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements, with NEPA documents to be submitted to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for review in 2024.

The project is estimated to cost $23.0 million, with anticipated funding comprising 80% FTA formula funds and a required 20% match from ARRC. The rehabilitation project will maintain bridge safety and load capacity, enhance stability of the track infrastructure, and extend the useful life of the 914-foot steel structure, which has been in service since its completion in 1921. Additional project information is available through the ARRC Bridge Program fact sheet at AlaskaRailroad.com under Corporate Projects, and the ARRC also issued a concurrent Request for Proposals (RFP 26-21-214666) opening May 28, 2026, and closing June 18, 2026, for as-needed Large Bridge Inspection and Load Rating Services for Bridge 284.2 and other ARRC bridges.

Bridge 284.2 Rehabilitation Project Scope

The Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) proposes to rehabilitate the 914-foot nine-span bridge crossing Hurricane Gulch at ARRC milepost 284.2, about equidistant from Talkeetna to the south and Denali to the north.

The bridge is a steel structure consisting of a 384-foot main arch span with truss and girder approach spans on either side.

The project proposes targeted repair and rehabilitation work on aging components (refer to the drawings on the page 2). This work consists of:

• rehabilitate the 384-foot deck arch span

• realign or replace the expansion bearings at piers 2 and 5

• repair spalling concrete at existing foundations

• install maintenance and inspection platforms

• secure piers 3 and 4 into the existing slopes with rock bolt anchors

• stabilize the south canyon wall to mitigate future erosion

• stabilize the eroding channel along the southwest corner of abutment 1

Purpose and Need The project’s rehabilitation activities will maintain bridge safety and load capacity, enhance the stability of the track infrastructure, and extend the useful life of the bridge.

This effort will help ensure railroad infrastructure remains

The 914-foot steel bridge spans Hurricane Gulch at ARRC milepost 284.2, about 60 miles south of Denali.
