VIDEO PRODUCTION LABOR CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS
Producer – Responsible for the organization of a production. Assists in script development, the hiring of actors and key crew members, while keeping track of finances throughout a production.
Five (5) years of experience is required.
Director – Is the leading creative artist on set, working directly with actors on their performances and has final creative control on almost every aspect of a production. May additionally be involved with casting, script revisions, shot composing and edit decisions. Five
(5) years of experience is required.
Assistant Director (AD) – Collaborates with both the Production Manager and the Director to make the shooting schedule as efficient as possible. Is responsible for breaking down a script into a shooting schedule and assisting in the scheduling of talent, crew and equipment needed for each shooting day. May also direct the background extras in a scene and can be responsible for preparing and distributing daily call sheets. Two (2) years of experience required.
Line Producer – Works in both preproduction and production, in charge of the physical execution of the film, from location scouting to keeping the production budget, to handling the logistics of daily catering for crew members. Five (5) years of experience is required.
Production Manager / Coordinator – Responsible for coordinating the “behind the scenes” logistics, which can include renting equipment, hiring crew members, and coordinating talent.
May work with the AD in preparing and distributing daily call sheets. Two (2) years of experience required.
Production Assistant (PA) – Responsible for any general duty or minor task that the production heads may need. Basic duties may include dispersing walkie-talkies, setting up pop-up tents and tables, running basic errands as needed or attaining any other last-minute item that the production might need. One (1) year of experience is required.
Production Designer – Works with the Director and is primarily responsible for the design and overall visual “look” and “feel” of a movie. This includes the use of costumes, landscapes, props and other visual scenery that could reflect the movie script. Five (5) years of experience required.
Best Boy – The lead electrician on set in charge of all the other electricians, operates, adjusts and balances the electrical load on the generator where required. Is also responsible for distributing the electrical cabling properly providing the required power to each of the lights.
Two (2) years of experience required.
Electrician (or juicers) – Set up and operate all the lighting instruments and cabling as instructed by the best boy or gaffer. Must be knowledgeable of tungsten and HMI lighting as well as changing and installing bulbs properly. Two (2) years of experience required.
Gaffer – Chief lighting technician responsible for developing a lighting plan according to the desires of the Director of Photography. The gaffer informs the best boy and key grip on where and which lights are to be placed. The gaffer is in charge of creating the best possible lighting scenario according to the camera framing. Two (2) years of experience required.
Grip – Responsibilities include creating pattern and shadow effects, coloring light, diffusing light or blocking light, as well as providing everything else that is built around the lights to create the quality of light that the gaffer desires. May also provide a variety of special rigging, securing and safety measures on set. Two (2) years of experience required.
Key Grip – The key grip is the lead grip in charge of all the other grips. The key grip and best boy collaborate with the gaffer and D.P. to formulate the best tactic for accomplishing a given shot. The key grip oversees the proper camera rigging mechanisms as well as manages the light blocking and diffusing techniques. Two (2) years of experience required.
Dolly Grip – Responsible for moving the dolly or small truck which rolls on dolly tracks and carries the camera. The dolly may sometimes carry the camera crew and/or director, allowing the camera to move towards or away from the subject being filmed. Two (2) years of experience required.
Art Director – Works with the production designer and is responsible for the design and construction of a film set. Essentially is assistant to the production designer, helping construct the “look” and “feel” of the movie. Two (2) years of experience required.
Prop Maker – Constructs unique and specialized set props that are too difficult to attain, or too expensive to purchase, manufacturing from scratch using various materials that may include
Styrofoam, plastics, electronics, metals, woods or glass types of materials. Is usually skilled in a wide variety of machining, construction and sculpting techniques. Two (2) years of experience required.
Prop Master – Acquires, organizes, maintains and accounts for all the various props (any set decoration piece that can be readily moved) needed for the production, to include such items as guns, knives, books, phones, dish-ware, food, musical instruments, pets or any other item that needs to be present to fulfill the story line. Two (2) years of experience required.
Set Construction Coordinator / Builder – Supervises the fabrication and physical integrity of the various sets needed as directed by the production designer and art director. Is also in charge of budgeting and ordering the needed materials for set designs. May also be responsible for hiring carpenters. Two (2) years of experience required.
Set Decorator / Dresser – Lead decision-maker on what furnishings and other decorations are used on set, working closely with the art director and production designer to create the optimal visual environment for filming. This may include various items such as paintings, fabrics, and other non-movable decorative set pieces. Two (2) years of experience required.
Storyboard Artist – Creates a series of illustrations and sketches based on the director’s vision during pre-production. Each sketch represents a different camera set-up. These drawings may include camera angles, characters and set design. The illustrations are used to assist the other head departments in understanding their tasks. Two (2) years of experience required.
Director of Photography (DP) – In charge of the overall visual look of the film, as seen through the camera, and responsible for camera and lens selection for use in a production. Additionally, will design the shot’s framing and camera movements in conjunction with the Director, and are in charge of the camera crew, lighting design, often collaborating with the gaffer. Five (5) years of experience required.
Camera Operator – Physically controls and operates the camera during filming, controlling the shot’s framing and the camera movements under the direction of the DP (Director of
Photography). Five (5) years of experience required. and works closely with the 1st AC.
Camera Assistant (1st AC) – The chief assistant to the camera operator in charge of measuring and pulling focus during filming. Additionally helps setup and build the camera, as well as maintain and clean the camera and lenses. Two (2) years of experience required.
Camera Operator (Aerial) – Qualified and equipped to film aboard small airplanes and helicopters. Drone operators are required to have a current PART 107 Drone Operator License.
Two (2) years of experience required.
Camera Operator (Jib Arm / Crane) – Responsible for setting up and operating the mechanical camera crane or “jib arm”, primarily used for large establishing shots that require substantial elevation and smooth motion. Two (2) years of experience required.
Steadicam Operator – Responsible for setting up and operating the Steadicam camera stabilizer system in order to produce extremely smooth hand-held shots. Two (2) years of experience required.
Camera Operator (Underwater) – Operates the underwater camera at the direction of the
Director. Two (2) years of experience.
Data Wrangler (2nd AC) – Responsible for organizing, labeling, downloading, duplicating and reformatting the digital storage cards for use on set and the editing room. May also be required to operate the slate or clapper to maintain sync and the correct labeling for every shot. Two (2) years of experience required.
Photographer – Responsible for taking clear, dynamic photos according to client specifications.
Duties include setting up backdrops, lighting and equipment to prepare for a photo shoot, directing talent and subjects to capture the perfect image and editing photos to remove blemishes and correct lighting issues. Two (2) years of experience required.
Writer – Responsible for creating the dialogue, characters, and storyline that make up a script or screenplay. Works with producers, directors, and FBI subject matter experts (SME) to edit and adjust a script as necessary. Five (5) years of experience is required.
Script Supervisor – Works closely with the director by taking detailed notes concerning what has been shot, needs to be shot, and also notes any deviations from take to take. Additionally makes sure that the dialogue corresponds with the script and takes logging notes essential to the post-production editing process, such as locating shots and identifying best takes. Two (2) years of experience required.
Teleprompter Operator – Responsible for setting up the teleprompter on the camera, connecting the computer that provides the scrolling text program, and operating the teleprompter during filming. Is normally given the script ahead of time so that they can enter it into the computer before arriving on set. Two (2) years of experience required.
Sound Mixer – Is responsible for leveling, monitoring and recording of audio during production, additionally determining which microphones to use as well as their placement. Serves as head of a sound department, supervising the boom operator and other sound utility personnel. Is required to deliver raw sound files to the Data Wrangler for archival and redundancy purposes. Five (5) years of experience required.
Boom Operator / Utility – Is responsible for properly positioning the microphone boom pole during filming. Serves as assistant to the sound mixer. Must be able to follow the actors movements while staying clear of cameras and lights. Two (2) years of experience required.
Location Manager – Responsible for attaining all the legal permits and other clearances needed to gain proper permission for filming in a particular location. Takes care of attaining and processing any other location permit fees. Additionally, may assists in coordinating the parking of vehicles. Two (2) years of experience required.
Location Scout – Assists in finding the various filming locations desired by the Producer and
Director. Two (2) years of experience required.
Makeup Artist – Responsible for applying and creating a variety of looks on the actors skin surfaces with makeup, from current trends to classic or period pieces, creating a look according to the director’s desires, often inspired by the characterizations in a story. Five (5) years of experience required.
Special FX Makeup – Responsible for using a variety of techniques for applying and gluing different materials such as latex, gelatin and other colorations which are used on the face or skin of an actor. Gore and blood, burns, and aging special effects are the more commonly used prosthetic makeup techniques. Five (5) years of experience required.
Costume Designer – Makes decisions on which wardrobes and costumes actors will wear based on the script requirements and character portrayals. Create or choose various clothing patterns, designs, colors, sizes and accessories for each wardrobe used during production. Two (2) years of experience required.
Wardrobe Stylist – Works closely with the costume designer and assists with preparing everything related to the actors clothing, costumes and wardrobe. Common tasks are maintaining and styling for all the wardrobes worn by the various actors. May also assist in helping to organize, disperse and account for all the costumes used on set. Two (2) years of experience required.
Pyro Technician / Explosives (Armorer) – Primarily responsible for the handling, maintenance and care of all firearms, weapons and pyrotechnics that are used during filming. Duties include providing correct weapons to suit era and style of production, advising director on weapon use, instructing actors how to safely handle and use weapons, and ensures safety of production population when weapons are in use. Pyrotechnics handling requires a federal or state license or permit. Five (5) years of experience required.
Special Effects Coordinator – Designs and supervises the various effects needed for filming using mechanical and/or optical illusion techniques, and provides the visual elements needed such as recreating weather elements or assisting with props that break, shatter, collapse, burn, smoke or explode. Five (5) years of experience required.
Special Effects Technician – Works under the special effects coordinator and assists in physically creating the visual elements needed. Two (2) years of experience required.
Stunt Coordinator – Manages and coordinates all dangerous action sequences that require a stunt performer. Is responsible for following all appropriate safety regulations during filming to ensure the safety of every stunt performer. Five (5) years of experience required.
Stunt Performer / Stunt Double – Typically performs stunts such as car crashes, falls from great height, and explosions. Five (5) years of experience is required.
Captains / Gang Boss – Organizes and provides a variety of vehicles and transportation for all crew, equipment and actors to and from the filming locations. Deploys the appropriate vehicles and drivers at the proper times to keep the production on schedule and on budget. Also work closely with the location manager in attaining the proper parking permits and parking locations for all vehicles. One (1) year of experience required.
Transportation Driver – Works under the supervision of the Transportation Captain. Physically drive and operate all provided production vehicles to and from filming locations. This includes the transport of all crew, equipment and actors safely to and from the film set while staying on schedule. Types of production vehicles may include cube trucks, passenger vans, stake beds, flatbeds, limos, cars or any other needed production vehicle. One (1) year of experience required.
Casting Director – Responsible for selecting suitable actors and voice talent for roles in productions. Collaborates with producers, directors, and writers to determine the scope of a production. Analyzes scripts, schedules auditions, and manages actor contracts. Is additionally responsible for Screen Actor Guild (SAG) requirements when appropriate. Five (5) years of experience is required.
Actor –Required to gain an intimate understanding of a character, study all lines and direction, and perform during production. Must exhibit exceptional reading, movement, improvisation, and memorization skills. Minimum one (1) year of experience required.
Voice Actor / Voiceover Artist – For the purposes of voice-only recording, is required to read a written script aloud with contextual emotions. Must speak with clear articulation and pronunciation. Must possess the technical expertise to create quality sound if operating personal recording equipment. One (1) year of experience required.
Craft Services – Provides the various meals, snacks and beverages made available to a film cast
& crew throughout the day. One (1) year of experience required.
CG (Computer Graphics) Operator – Under the supervision of the director and producer, is responsible for the set up and play out of graphic elements included in pre-recorded or live programming. Manages graphics content as it corresponds to the scheduled rundown for live or pre-recorded programs. Two (2) years of experience required.
Floor Manager – Responsible for giving information from the director in the control room to the crew on the studio floor. Ensures all equipment is working on the set and the set is clean and free of debris. Informs the director and producer of off-camera action and deals with technical issues. Two (2) years of experience required.
Video Engineer – Installs and/or maintains video equipment and is responsible for analyzing video quality and performing optimization to achieve desired results. Certification, education, or five (5) years of experience required.
Audio Engineer – Responsible for creating and editing recordings, setting up and maintaining audio equipment in studio and at events, analyzing audio quality and performing optimization to achieve desired results. Certification, education, or five (5) years of experience required.
Video Editor – Is responsible for reviewing audio and visual footage and using computer software to organize clips into a cohesive unit. Their duties include splitting or combining video clips, adding appropriate sounds or graphics and watching the finished product to catch mistakes before submitting it for review. Five (5) years of experience required.
Assistant Editor – Shall assist in managing media, assembling video timelines, doing camera cuts, and providing support to post-production supervision as assigned. Two (2) years of experience required.
2D Artist / Animator – Mainly responsible for producing high quality 2D animated sequences using digital tools. Provides graphic design support to a variety of tasks including graphics and animations for videos, print production products, stand-alone graphics, and ad hoc media requests. Two (2) years of experience required.
3D Artist / Animator – Mainly responsible for producing high quality 3D animated sequences using digital tools. Provides graphic design support to a variety of tasks including 3D graphics and animations for videos, designing a single 3D-illustrated object, and ad hoc media requests.
Two (2) years of experience required.
Colorist - Contributes to the mood and look of a film by defining its colors using color editing software to add the desired hues, tones, and color palettes to an edited production. Works closely with the director and director of photography to create the desired color palette for each scene.
Corrects footage to remove color inconsistencies or errors. Five (5) years of experience required.
Transcriber – Responsible for listening to live proceedings or audio and video recordings to create word-for-word written versions of them in support of scriptwriting and/or Closed Caption services. One (1) year of experience required.
Captioner – Creates text-based closed captions from transcribed audio and video recordings. In addition to dialogue, may be required to describe sound effects and music cues. Must be able to deliver properly formatted VTT, SRT, or SCC Caption files based on project requirements. One
(1) year of experience required.
Music Composer – Writes and arranges original music in a variety of musical styles to reflect moods within the music which have been specified by directors and/or producers. Two (2) years of experience required.
Musician - Performs and records music written by and/or to the discretion of the music composer. Two (2) years of experience required.
Supervising Sound Editor – Responsible for the finished sound of a project by selecting, polishing, and assembling recorded dialogue, sound effects, and music into a complete, integrated soundtrack. Five (5) years of experience required.
Sound Designer – Works closely with the sound mixer, sound supervisor, editor, and the director to create original sound elements, as well as collects, edits, and creates sound effects, ambient effects, and music. Five (5) years of experience required.
Sound Editor – Responsible for assembling the overall sound design of a completed production, in charge of selecting, recording/re-recording, and piecing together the right sounds to fit the edited footage, to include dialogue tracks, automated dialog replacement (ADR), foley, and wild tracks, pulling from sound effects libraries and any music used. Works closely with the director and sound designer to clearly understand what audio needs to be captured or implemented in a way that will enhance the final product. Five (5) years of experience required.
Assistant Sound Editor – Responsible for the workflow of the post-production sound crew, keeping the most current version of the project and guide tracks available for the editors. Two (2) year experience required.
Avid Certified Support Representative – Responsible for installing, configuring, and providing support for Avid products and systems to include Avid NEXIS, Avid MediaCentral /
Production Management, and Media Composer. Avid Certified Support Representative credential is required.
