About this file

This document is a detailed inventory of available equipment across three specialized laboratory facilities. The Space Chemistry Lab houses primary instruments including a guided-ion beam system for studying ion-neutral collision dynamics at 0.1-300 eV, an ion-neutral chemiluminescence detector for quantifying light emission at 5-10,000 eV, an electrospray thruster mass spectrometer for characterizing plume composition and kinetic energy, a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer for high-resolution multiplexed mass analysis, and an O-atom surface conversion apparatus for studying oxygen-atom interactions with material surfaces at 3-200 eV kinetic energy. Supporting equipment includes turbo pumps (250-1000 L/s capacity from Varian, Agilent, Edwards, and Leybold), mechanical pumps, recirculating chillers, multiple spectrometers (McPherson VUV and 225 1m models, Andor Shamrock 303i and Kymera 328i), quadrupole mass spectrometer systems (4-4000 amu detection range), scientific cameras, channeltrons, and microchannel plates. Power supply infrastructure comprises Stanford Research Systems high-voltage supplies (1250-5000 V), programmable 8-channel supplies, amplifiers, and pulse generators, along with signal processing components including photon counters, oscilloscopes, discriminators, and electrometers.

The LaSR Lab contains a large vacuum chamber for transient high-temperature gas-producing reactions with spectroscopic access, an electrospray ionization 22-pole trap mass spectrometer for dissociation rate measurements, a plasma chamber for AC/DC laboratory plasma studies, a custom 1064 nm laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy instrument with variable pressure capability, and a custom metal vapor coating instrument. The Plasma Chem Lab houses flowing afterglow–Langmuir probe flow tube instruments, selected-ion flow tube instruments, and a nanoparticle ion trap, supported by atomic oxygen generation, an Atlas ozone generator, Thermo Scientific recirculating chillers, dry mechanical vacuum pumps, Edwards turbomechanical pumps, a Litron Nd:YAG 100 Hz laser, Leybold Roots-style pumps, MKS mass flow controllers, and various test equipment. All facilities operate in high-vacuum environments and include computational resources with LabView software, Igor Pro, LAMMPS molecular dynamics, and GAMESS quantum mechanics software. Component stocks including fasteners and seals are maintained, with additional items procured through government processes as needed.

List of Available Equipment

Space Chemistry Lab

A high-level assessment of the instruments already established is first provided, given in Table 1 below, Table 1: Summary of capability and function of the various assembled instruments in the Space Chemistry Laboratory

INSTRUMENT PRIMARY CAPABILITY/FUNCTION

GUIDED-ION BEAM Enables studies of ion-neutral collision dynamics at user-selected laboratory energies between 0.1 and 300 eV. Typical detection is via quadrupole mass spectrometry and ions are confined in double octopole system.

ION-NEUTRAL CHEMI-

LUMINESCENCE

DETECTOR

Quantifies light emission from ion-neutral collisions at user-selected laboratory energies between 5 and 10,000 eV. Optical detection systems are available in vacuum ultraviolet, visible, near infrared and MWIR/LWIR.

ELECTROSPRAY

THRUSTER MASS

SPECTROMETER

Characterizes ion composition, current density, mass flow and kinetic energy of electrospray thruster plumes. Utilizes a Faraday cup, quartz crystal microbalance and quadrupole mass spectrometer for detection.

REFLECTRON TIME-

OF-FLIGHT MASS

SPECTROMETER

Provides high-resolution, multiplexed mass analysis of ion beams from an electrospray (or other) source through orthogonal extraction time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Detection currently accomplished via microchannel plates.

O-ATOM SURFACE

CONVERSION

APPARATU

S

Studies products resulting from the interaction of a neutral oxygen-atom beam with material surfaces. O-atom beam is ~10^10 atoms/cm^2 at a user tunable kinetic energy in the 3-200 eV range.

All instrumentation in the laboratory operates in the 10-6 to 10-8 torr (high vacuum) pressure range via turbo pump technology backed by appropriate mechanical backing pumps.
