About this file

This file is an engineering screen layout diagram for a KC-46A boom operator virtual reality simulator, identifying 12 display elements and their training utility. The diagram prioritizes boom position data (roll, elevation, and telescope length) and boom status indicators (reset, ready, contact, disconnect) as required information for engineer training. The most critical display element is a crossplot showing boom elevation on the Y-axis and boom roll on the X-axis, which includes current position, a two-second data trail, contact and disconnect envelopes, latched values of last contact/disconnect, and tolerance boxes. Additional useful but non-essential data includes time, bank angle, axial and radial loads, airspeed, altitude, mach number, telescope position at disconnect, boom disconnect limits, and position of last contact and disconnect. Elements identified as not needed include altitude/airspeed/heading data, boom disconnect digital values, contact/disconnect counters, fuel pressure values, and boom status stripchart displays.

The file supports the Air Force's KC-46A ARO/Receiver/Engineering Virtual Reality Simulator acquisition (Solicitation FA9302-26-Q-0055), which aims to provide effective operator training for the high-risk occupational specialty of boom operator. The simulator must render boom dynamics accurately to support Edwards AFB's test mission and ensure operators receive correct training rather than negative instruction that could compromise safety of airmen and aircraft. Vendors are expected to demonstrate proven track record in supporting similar virtual reality training systems.

Text version

1 – Altitude, Airspeed, and Heading data – Not needed 2 – Crossplot of Boom Elevation (Y-axis) and Boom Roll (X-axis) with current position, trail of data for ~2 secs from live, contact envelope and disconnect envelope boxes, latched value of last contact and disconnect, and smaller boxes for tolerances. – The most important data for engineer training in a simulator 3 – Boom disconnect limits digital values – Not needed, may be useful if pursuing C-17 and KC-46 receiver 4 – Boom Statuses and disconnect source – Depending on fidelity provided for boom station, some of this data may be useful but is not required except for Boom status (reset, ready, contact, disconnect) which would be required.

5 – General information (time, weight, C.G., fuel weight, bank angle, pitch, OAT) – Not required, time and bank angle may be useful 6 – Boom telescope length – Tied in with #2 as most important data for engineer training.

7 – Axial (x) and radial (y & z) loads stripcharts and digital values – Not required but useful. Can be mathematically derived from boom rates with some noise/randomness added.

8 – Position of last contact and disconnect – Very useful and is digital values for the latched values from #2.

9 – Boom status stripchart and IDS light – Stripchart may be useful but is not necessary 10 – Contact and disconnect counters – Not needed or useful for training 11 – Fuel pressure digital values – not needed or useful for training 12 – Boom position (roll, elevation, and telescope) stripcharts, and gauges – Useful but less so than #2.

Data Required: Boom Positions (Roll, Elevation, Telescope), Boom Status (reset, ready, contact, disconnect) Useful: Time, bank angle, Axial (x) & Radial Loads (y & z), airspeed, altitude, mach, Telescope at Disconnect status, boom disconnect limits, image1.png
