PIPING MATERIAL

PART 1 - - GENERAL

This section is a material specification consisting of Part 1--General and Part 2--Products. Included with each product service description in Part 2 is a brief statement concerning fabrication. Part 3--Execution is not applicable to this section.

Substitutions and Changes:

Any of the following items shall require Contracting Officer review and approval:

• Substitutions of specified materials

• Technical changes to specifications.

SUBMITTALS:

Reports: For each lot of nonmetallic materials to be used in Liquid Oxygen (LOX) services above 500 psig design pressure, and not included on SSC Drawing No. SSC-54000-GM30 or KTI-5210(materials exempt from batch testing), a certified test report per ASTM D2512 shall be furnished to the Contracting Officer. The Contractor shall also provide a signed statement that only materials from the tested lot(s) were used in the manufacture of nonmetallic items, as called for by the Contracting Officer.

Certified Mill Test Reports: Certified mill test reports shall be required for all stainless steel and nickel-copper alloy materials (including, but not limited to, pipe, fittings, branch connections, flanges, nuts, and bolts) and for carbon steel materials used in systems with a design pressure equal to or higher than 6,000 psig. For stainless materials, the carbon content shall not exceed 0.08%. Traceability requirements for materials used in 6,000 psig services and above are further outlined in Sections 15016-Shop Fabrication of Piping (Heavy Wall), and 15014-Field Fabrication and Installation of Piping. Certified mill test reports shall conform to requirements as specified by the applicable ASTM standard. Chemical and mechanical test results shall be clearly noted. Where required by this Specification, any impact testing results shall

SECTION 15060 PIPING MATERIAL Revision 5 likewise be shown. In addition, test result for any special testing identified, as for materials in use with 6000 psi and above systems, shall be furnished to the Contracting Officer.

In addition to certified mill test reports, the Contracting Officer may, at the Contracting Officer's discretion, direct the Contractor to perform laboratory testing of certain materials to verify conformance with specifications. Particular emphasis shall be placed on bolting materials. Successful material tests (i.e., the material matches the CMTR) will be performed at the expense of the Contracting Officer.

Unsuccessful material tests shall be at the expense of the Contractor, and the Contractor shall take corrective action to ensure no unsuitable materials are used in construction. Corrective action shall be performed at no cost to the Government.

Welding Procedure: In systems where 304 material has been specified to be used in conjunction with F316 material, a weld procedure for joining the different materials shall be submitted by the Contractor to the Contracting Officer for approval. Likewise any other welding requiring the joining of dissimilar metals (e.g. Monel 400 to 304 Stainless Steel) shall require a weld procedure.

PART 2 - - PRODUCTS

GENERAL:

Material, equipment, subassemblies, and fabrication, electrical and mechanical in nature, shall be new and of domestic manufacture to the fullest extent possible. Contractor shall identify non-domestic items in the quotation.

ANSI Piping Material Requirements:

All piping shall conform to either ANSI B36.10 or ANSI B36.19, as applicable.

Grayloc or Equal Connections:

Reference Specification ROSS-1008 “High Pressure Hubs, Seal Rings, and Clamps” concerning information about Grayloc connectors.

Specific hub, clamp, and seal ring ordering information is available by contacting Grayloc Inc. at 11835 Charles Street, Houston, TX 77041-2411 (713-466-8853). SecuraMax, 835 Fourth Line, Oakville, Ontario, Canada L6L 5B8 (905-842-1721) is also an acceptable supplier for high pressure hubs, clamps and seal rings. When ordering materials include full service conditions for components on purchase order for reference.

Tapering shall be performed as indicated.

Nuts on bolts shall be the spherical type to fit into the concave surface on the clamp.

Bolt threads and contact surfaces of clamps shall be lubricated with "Krytox 240 AC" or approved equal.

For clamps, as cast or as forged, internal diameter contact surfaces are not acceptable. These surfaces shall be machined by the manufacturer to ensure full, evenly distributed loading across the clamp.

All alloy or carbon steel bolts shall have a coating of a protectorant such as “Cosmolyne” applied after the bolt has been properly tightened.

Corrosion Allowance:

There is no corrosion allowance included in this Specification.

Pipe Threads:

Threaded pipe shall only be used where called for within individual piping material specifications, and on an exception basis as noted herein. The use of threaded pipe except as called for within individual piping material specifications is discouraged because of both safety and performance concerns.

Under no circumstances shall threaded pipe be used for hydrogen service.

Under no circumstances shall threaded pipe be used for cryogenic services.

Under no circumstances shall threaded pipe be used in systems with a MAWP higher than 6000 psi.

Threaded pipe may be proposed for use in other applications not restricted above, however, if not specifically called out in the piping material specification the use of the threaded connection shall be reviewed and approved by the Contracting Officer on a case-by-case basis. At a minimum the following conditions shall be considered when evaluating the feasibility of using a threaded connection:

● Pipe diameter and pressure rating

● Corrosion which could lead to failure of joint

● Potential for leakage

● Difficulty in cleaning

● Potential for weakening pipe wall if threads are overcut

● Consequences of leakage and failure

● Use of seal welding

● Use of alternative connections

● Use extreme care in selecting and installing the correct pressure class of threaded fitting for each application

Pipe threads shall be machine cut, properly reamed and cleaned of waste oil or metal per ANSI B1.20.1.

Thread engagement shall be capable of producing a leak-tight joint without distorting the fitting or thread.

All pipe nipples shall be of sufficient length to receive a pipe wrench on the unthreaded portion. Close nipples shall not be permitted.

The lubricant used for cutting pipe threads shall be LOX compatible. It is recommended that a soap-based lubricant be used.

Thread Sealant:

Threaded pipe and tubing connections shall use Teflon tape film (except for Propane service), Scotch Brand #547, or Contracting Officer approved equal. Apply and wrap the tape starting on the second to third male threads in a manner that will permit no loose tape to enter the piping system. Thread sealant tape used in LOX systems must be LOX compatible (see Part 2, Material for Liquid Oxygen Service). Do not us Teflon tape to seal threads in Propane service. Use Loctite Thread Sealant 564 or an approved thread sealant for use in Propane service.

Socketweld Connections:

The use of socketweld connections is not allowed for in the piping material specifications. However, on a case-by-case basis, and in accordance with the guidance provided below, socketweld connections may be used.

Under no circumstances shall socketweld connections be used in oxygen systems.

Under no circumstances shall socketweld connections be used in systems with a MAWP higher than 6000 psi.

Socketweld connections may be proposed for use in other applications not restricted above. However, each proposed use shall be reviewed and approved by the Contracting Officer on a case-by-case basis. At a minimum the following conditions shall be considered when evaluating the feasibility of using a socketweld connection:

● Cleanliness requirements of system for which socketweld fittings are proposed

● Use of downstream filtration in pressurant or purge systems

● Proper installation and inspection of socketweld fittings

Branch Connections:

Weldolets used for branch connections shall be a minimum of two sizes smaller than the header, unless otherwise noted on the drawings and supported by case-by-case engineering calculations. For next smaller size than the header, use a reducing tee Same size branch connections use a standard tee.

Flange Facings:

All standard raised flange facings (including those on valves) shall conform to the requirements set forth in MSS SP-6. Flanges shall be provided with concentric serrations, a 250 AARH finish; grooves shall be 0.002 to 0.003 in. deep and manufactured with a 0.060 in. roundness tool. No radial tool marks shall be allowed.

Asbestos:

Asbestos shall not be used with any gasket or seal ring material, or with valve packings or bonnet gaskets, PIPING MATERIAL 15060-6 of 90

Coupled and Threaded Piping:

Coupled and threaded pipe shall not be used for underground service.

Teflon and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE):

"Teflon" and "PTFE" are terms used interchangeably throughout the Drawings and Specifications.

Marking of Bolting Materials:

All studs, bolts, and nuts identified in this Specification shall be marked in accordance with the following ASTM requirements:

ASTM A320 B8: Paragraphs 11.1, 11.2 of A320 ASTM A193 B7: Paragraphs 16.1, 16.2 of A193 ASTM A194 GR2 and GR8: Paragraphs 11.1, 11.2 of A194

Metallic Items:

All stainless steel and other metallic materials for service below -20°F, not temperature rated per ASME B31.3, having pressure containing parts of strain hardened (cold worked) material must be impact tested at the low temperature limit of the applicable specification section per ASME B31.3, Paragraph 323.3.

Bolts:

Bolting used in low temperature service (-290º or lower) shall be ASTM A320 GR B8 either Class 1 or Class 2, as shown in ASME B31.3 Table A-2 “Design Stress Values for Bolting Materials”, and paragraph

309.2.1. Note that Class 1 bolts may only be used in Class 400 and higher flanged joint connections if calculations are performed to demonstrate adequate joint strength. Also note that A320 GR B8 Class 2 bolting material is only rated for -325º. Nuts shall be ASTM A194 GR 8.

Examination for Shop-fabricated Welds:

Welds shall be radiographed in accordance with B31.3, Paragraph 344.5, except fillet welds, which shall be liquid penetrant inspected. Liquid penetrant examinations shall be made for every ¼ in. of weld thickness, and in accordance with ASME B31.3, Paragraph 344.4.1(b).

Beveled Ends:

For special wall thickness pipe and fittings, the Contractor shall specify the bevel for compatibility with the Contractor's welding procedures. For pipe and fittings which must interface with the high pressure GFE valves, the Contractor shall ensure that the bevel rendered matches the bevel specified and shown on the valve Drawings.

MATERIAL FOR LIQUID OXYGEN SERVICE:

Approved Material:

Materials listed in SSC-54000-GM30 and KTI-5210 are exempt from separate batch testing (within the specified pressure and other limitations noted for each material). Materials that are not listed in SSC- 54000-GM30 shall meet the requirements of NASA-STD-6001, ASTM G63, ASTM G94, and in the case of non-metallic items shall be batch tested in accordance with ASTM D2512.

PIPING AND COMPONENT SPECIFICATION SHEETS:

Following are piping and component specification sheets preceded by an index denoting the sequential order of appearance. Each sheet indicates the maximum allowable pressure and temperature, the material designation, the service, and general notes for the piping or component material specified. Some sheets also include a brief fabrication note. These sheets constitute the allowable material specifications applicable to material selections for the work of this specification. Material substitutions shall be as stated in Substitutions and Changes of this section.

GENERAL:

1. Equipment and other materials of the Fire Water Spray System shall be Underwriters

Laboratories/NFPA-FM approved and furnished complete with all necessary trim including, electrical.

2. For underground installation details and notes, see FIREX system drawings.

GENERAL:

1. Installation of excess flow valves must be in accordance with NFPA Standards 58 and 59.
