About this file

This document is a series of Questions and Answers from vendors regarding a solicitation for a 20-Ton Industrial Water Chiller. The key details are:

The chiller must be rated for continuous usage with ambient working limits between 14°F and 113°F, have a minimum cooling capacity of 20 tons (239,756 BTUs/hr), use water as the medium, and have a maximum noise rating of 69 dB at 32 feet. The chiller must have a 55-gallon minimum capacity self-contained water tank made of stainless steel. Power requirements are 460V, 3-phase, 60Hz with a maximum of 60 full load amps. The chiller must fit within specified dimensions of 45" wide, 100" long, and 90" tall, with a dry weight not exceeding 2,660 lbs. The chiller must be self-contained on a movable skid/frame. Minimum clearance requirements are 6.5 feet on the sides and 10 feet on top. Vendors had questions about refrigerant type, reservoir material, indoor/outdoor installation, and flexibility on unit size and noise level, which the program team addressed in their responses.

1Does the refrigerant have to be R-410a or can it be a newer specification?Newer refrigerants may be used; but only if they may be used safely indoors, around personnel, and in an engine room with combustion occurring. Any new refrigerant used cannot necessitate storing the chiller outside or in a different facility.
2Would a poly reservoir be acceptable versus stainless steel?Yes, a poly reservoir is an acceptable material for the reservoir because it does not rust, similar to stainless steel.
3Is this going to be installed indoors or outdoors? The chiller will be installed indoors and within twenty-five feet (25’) of working employees. The indoor use requirement also necessitates the noise specifications in the requirements.
4If an air-cooled unit is acceptable, will there be adequate room for ventilation for the hot air from the condenser fan?The room the chiller will be installed in is approximately seventy feet (70’) wide by fifty feet (50’) deep by eighty feet (80’) tall (70’ W × 50’ D × 80’ T). Please keep in mind the chiller’s proximity to working employees, the maximum noise tolerances, working in an engine room/combustion area, and the quoted chiller’s stand-off distances.
5Is there any flexibility in unit sizes or dimension to quote quieter units? The dimension and stand-off distances are firm
