About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for a C-5 Shotpeen Machine solicitation (FA857125R0014) issued by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Air Force Sustainment Center. The solicitation is a 100% small business set-aside with a NAICS code 333517 and a size standard of 500 employees, seeking a contractor to provide a specialized shotpeening machine for C-5 aircraft landing gear trunnions. Key technical details include performing shotpeening on the inside diameter of the trunnion using a rotating lance device, with specific operational requirements such as vertical travel ranging from 5 to 9 feet, horizontal nozzle movement of 6 inches, and manual media ricochet control.
The solicitation requires proposal submission by 11 August 2025 at 12:00 PM EST, with proposals to be emailed to Phillip Braswell and Joshua Sharpe. A site visit was conducted on 21 July 2025, and vendors must provide financial documentation demonstrating capability to perform the contract. Additional requirements include achieving a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment score of 110 and completing a pre-award survey through DCMA to determine financial capability. Interested parties must submit attendee information for site visit background checks and are recommended to bring personal protective equipment including safety glasses and ear plugs.

Text version
1. Specifically for this solicitation, I am confused with the expectations of the initial request.
· The government hosted a site visit on 21 July 2025 in order to clarify uncertain technical aspects that may have arisen. Based on this site visit we have incorporated photos of our existing site and equipment to assist in identifying the work to be performed. As this item is specialized in form, fit and function to Shot Peen the C-5, we seek to award a contract with a contractor who can provide concept drawing and final deliverable for government approval IAW paragraph 2.2 of the Purchase Description dated 11 June 2025.
2. One detail in the PD states that the ‘shotpeen shall include enclosure for “fake” trunyon’. We are not sure what this requirement is describing.
· The shotpeen machine is for blasting the C5 landing gear trunnion with media. The trunnion is circular in shape and is close to 1 foot in diameter.
· A picture of the current machine's fake trunnion and its enclosure will be provided.
3. The maneuverability seems to imply that the peening operation will take place while the MLG trunnion is still attached to the aircraft.
· Yes, Correct
4. The process will target a repair to only the inside diameter of the trunnion using a rotating lance device.
· Yes, Correct
5. The operator will manually drape the area to control the ricochet of the peening media.
· Not done currently
6. Is the trunnion bore perfectly parallel to the ground when peened (that is, the horizontal motion of the rotating peening lance won’t require tilting of the lance and coordinated motion between the vertical and horizontal axes to follow the angle of the bore)?
· Not needed
7. Will the operator broom up and dispose of the peening media after the operation?
· No
8. How long is the bore; what is the estimated length of horizontal travel required?
· It varies
9. What is the estimated vertical travel required (9’-6’)?
· It varies, start at 5ft and goes up to 9ft.
10. How will the fake trunnion be held for process verification?
· Shall include enclosure.
11. Can you confirm that the nozzle moves in/out and it's overall travel distance needed?
· Nozzle does move in and out, it moves 6”.
