Question/Response QUESTION: Specification: 3.1.19 Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Requirements The BAT system shall maintain a classification of Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO) SAFE ORDNANCE IAW the requirements of MIL-STD-464C, section 5.9.3, Table 9.
MIL-STD-464C, section 5.9.3 states ‘Electrically initiated devices (EIDs) in ordnance shall not be inadvertently actuated during or experience degraded performance characteristics after exposure to the external EME levels of TABLE 9 for both direct RF induced actuation of the EID and inadvertent activation of an electrically powered firing circuit.’. We request clarification on the Government’s position regarding how contractors are to apply TABLE 9 to the BAT system, which is not an ordnance and does not contain any EIDs.
RESPONSE: The BAT Specification has been updated to reflect the fact that the BAT tester should be considered a source and not a victim. Specification 3.1.19 now reads "When located at a distance of 10 feet from Electrically Initiated Devices (EIDS) as defined in MIL-STD-464C, the BAT System shall be compatible with ordnance classified as Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO) SAFE ORDNANCE IAW the requirements of MIL-STD-464C, section 5.9.3, Table 9."
