ITEM DESCRIPTIONS

A brief description of some of the major sub-systems required to realize ITIPS is presented.

Multi-Channel Demodulator The demodulator is a hardware unit that receives an analog frequency/phase modulated carrier signal, recovers baseband data and produces the Pulse Code Modulated (PCM) data that was carried in the received signal.

Telemetry Data Processor and Recorder with Integrated Control Terminal This integrated unit incorporates the functionality of bit synchronization, GPS Time decoding/translating, best data merging, data recording and can also function as a central control terminal to control ITIPS and monitor system health.

Bit Synchronization Data being transmitted off the ICBM, in order to reduce bandwidth requirements, passes through a frequency filter. This filter will effectively transform a square-wave digital data stream into a stream of rounded pulses. The bit synchronizer is used to recondition the rounded pulses back into their original square wave for use in ITIPS.

4.2.2 GPS Time Decoder, Translator

After launch, it is necessary to Generate GPS Time in order to process and record the real-time telemetry in a form to ensure correct playback and correlation with range time. This timing signal provides a point of reference for the telemetry data and is based upon the signals received from the Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation. The GPS Time Generator produces accurate Inter-Range Instrumentation Group (IRIG) time for the entire system. For stability and redundancy, the time generator employs very high stability and low phase noise Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillators (OCXO) that are very accurate and allow for adequate continuous precision timing signals for a defined time in the absence of GPS reception.

4.2.3 Best Data Engine

Multiple PCM signals containing the same data are transmitted to ITIPS. Each signal will have varying signal strengths and differing Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNR). The Best Data Engine combines these into a single merged data stream to form the best signal with the cleanest data and fewest data dropouts.

4.2.4 Digital Recorder

ITIPS collects and records all data from the missile to ensure that the data is available in case of any equipment failure or any anomalous events, such as ground maintenance replies (GMR), missile operational status replies (MOSR), or situations during Strategic Alert or during the countdown which lead to a hang-fire, or launch abort.

4.2.5 PCM stream simulation

Permits a user-programmable single stream of simulated PCM data to be created and output.

4.2.6 Control Terminal

A Control Terminal is used to configure ITIPS from a central location to structure the subsystems for the upcoming operational process and to monitor system health.

Patch Panel The patch panel is a switchboard that allows for distribution of multiple data signals to the required components of ITIPS either manually with patch plugs or computer controlled.

Server The Server is used to host a Telemetry Processing Software package that performs the function of frame synchronization, decommutation and data distribution to the ITIPS workstations

4.4.1 Frame Synchronization

The server first aligns with an incoming data stream through a process called frame synchronization by searching for defined bit patterns in the stream that denote a position in a frame, or packet, of the incoming data.

0. Decommutation After frame synchronization, individual measurands are identified according to the frame location and the process of decommutation separates the stream into the measured data such as sensor measurements, packed bus data or computer words.

4.4.3 Archive

The software is used to archive data into databases that can be retrieved at a later time for analysis.

Workstations The workstations are used to generate data products and monitor the performance of the missile systems.

4.5.1 Product Generation

Coupled with decommutation it is necessary to analyze and display the incoming data in real-time. Several standard decommutation algorithms should be available as well as user to define their own algorithms to create derived data products.

4.5.2 Display

After analysis, display is accomplished through implementation of Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) on computing systems to define telemetry stream decommutation content. Displays ease the task of interpreting raw measurands and can depict when measurands are within safe and meaningful limits, show relationships between measurands, and identify trends.

Driver Software for Strip Chart Printer The strip chart driver software will enable operation of the device from a computer via network.
