About this file
This document is a set of Questions and Answers from a 5G Industry Day event related to a Request for Information (RFI) for a KC-135 Radio Altimeter 5G Filter. The RFI is issued by the C/KC135 Contracting Branch, AFLCMC/WLT at Tinker Air Force Base, seeking information from industry on potential solutions to provide a 5G filter for the KC-135 aircraft's radio altimeter. Key details include:
The government is in the market research stage and has not yet approved an acquisition strategy. They are looking for the best solution to address the issue of 5G interference with the KC-135 radio altimeter. The fleet size is approximately 370 aircraft. The government is interested in company background information from respondents. All questions and answers from the industry day will be shared with all participants. The government provided clarification on technical terms like "Low Cost Mod" and details around the required airworthiness certification, mounting, and integration for the filter solution. Question from Vendor Answer from Govt
Is "Low Cost Mod" a quote or an acquisition project? A technical term?
LCM has a threshold for modification and that means it has to be under $5M
Is EMP and Nuclear certification a requirement?
Not for this system, no
Are you expecting this filter will be inside or outside of the aircraft?
Inside
OP checks, do you know how you are going to perform?
Yes
Once you install a filter do you have a specific plan for how to verify that it is OK or not ok?
Yes
Is this something we have to be involved with or is it entirely on your own?
It is on our own, organically
Do you have a specific mounting mechanism? Yes
How do we demonstrate that it will integrate to the avionics in place in the KC-135?
As long as you can provide appropriate test data that it meets the specs that we ask, that would satisfy
Will you list specific requirements for Airworthiness or is it up to us to propose what we think is right?
Airworthiness requirements are very specific in the MIL STD 461 and 810
Size of the fleet? 370 aircraft
What's the timeframe? When would you like to have these?
We are still in development and acquisition strategy has not been approved yet
Do you want us to give you a quick company background?
Yes sure go ahead
The questions we ask, are they going to be transmitted to the rest of the industry?
All questions will go out to everyone
Is that a known frequency or does that vary? Yeah, the squitter frequency is the published frequency for the LRA, 2100 yes
The return is just a reflection of that? Correct, the frequency of the return should be reflected that of the squitter.
Is it 2 per aircraft? Yes
Anything else from a timeline perspective? We are just in the market research stage of this so we're just looking for the best solution so that we can move forward
