CMI Package 8/18/2014

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY HISTORICAL COLLECTION

Color, Markings Insignia Package:

Republic F-105 D Thunderchief S/N 60-0482

National Museum Catalog # 1979-62

April 7, 2008

1. Exception to policy – use of semi-gloss paint texture in lieu of lusterless

“…this texture of paint is highly recommended in the Colorado climate that displays extreme temperatures, snow, and ultra-violet rays. Use of semi-gloss texture offers greater protection of the aircraft, better appearance for longer period of time, and cost savings (painting required less frequently) while maintaining as closely as possible a paint scheme consistent with appearance of the aircraft when operational.”

(NMUSAF email dated 27 OCT 2006, Mr. Tom Brewer, Chief Plans & Programs Division)

2. Operational History: The F-105 D, serial number 60-0482, on display at the northeast corner of the Terrazzo on the USAF Academy was built from parts of 10 different Vietnam-era aircraft at

McClellan AFB, CA in the late 1970’s . Thus, it has no historical associations. Undated (1970’s?)

black and white photos of the aircraft in the accession file show few if any markings.

3. Current Configuration: The aircraft is marked in the standard USAF SEA camouflage markings for F-105 aircraft (see image 1). Colors are: Black FS 17038, Green FS 34079, Green FS

34102, Tan FS 30219, and White FS 17875, with standard markings applied in accordance with US

Air Force Technical Order 1-1-4, Exterior Finishes, Insignia, and Markings, Applicable to USAF

Aircraft 14 May 1994, Change 7, 17 July 1998 .

F-105 THUNDERCHIEF

http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=2314

In 1951 Republic Aviation began a project to develop a supersonic tactical fighter-bomber to replace the

F-84F. The result was the F-105 Thunderchief, later affectionately nicknamed the "Thud." The prototype

YF-105A first flew in October 1955, but the first F-105D did not fly until June 1959. A total of 833

Thunderchiefs of all types were built, including 610 F-105Ds.

The U.S. Air Force sent F-105s to Southeast Asia shortly after the Tonkin Gulf incident in the summer of 1964. The USAF operated the F-105D extensively in the air campaign against North Vietnam called

Rolling Thunder. Although designed as a nuclear strike aircraft, the F-105 could carry a total of over

12,000 pounds of conventional ordnance -- a heavier bomb load than a World War II B-17. The F-105 was gradually replaced by the F-4 Phantom, and the USAF withdrew the last F-105D from service in

July 1980.
