The chlorinating material shall be introduced to the water lines and distribution system in a manner approved by the Contracting Officer.

If possible to do so, the lines shall be thoroughly flushed before introduction of the chlorinating materials.

After a contact period of not less than 8 and preferably 24 hours, the system shall be flushed with clean water until the residual chlorine content is not greater than 0.2 part per million. All valves in the lines being sterilized shall be opened and closed several times during the contact period.

3.10 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

3.10.1 Pressure Test

After the pipe has been laid and partially backfilled between joints, each section of pipe between valves shall receive the following hydrostatic test: The pipe shall be slowly filled with water and tested to 14 kg/cm2 minimum pressure. The pressure shall be applied by means of a pump connected to the pipe in a manner satisfactory to the Contracting Officer. A meter to measure make-up water shall also be installed.

The pump, pipe connections, taps into the pipe, all necessary apparatus and necessary labor shall be furnished by the Contractor. Before applying the specified test pressure, all air shall be expelled from the pipe. All exposed pipes, fittings, valves and joints shall be carefully examined during the open trench test.

Any cracked or defective pipes, fittings or valves discovered in consequence of this pressure test shall be removed and replaced by the Contractor with sound material and the test shall be repeated until satisfactory to the Contracting Officer. While the test pressure is being maintained, all exposed pipes, fittings, valves, hydrants and joints shall be inspected for leaks. The test pressure shall be maintained for a period of not less than two hours. Any joints showing visible leakage shall be repaired to the satisfaction of the Contracting Officer. Where concrete thrust blocking is provided, the pressure test shall not be made until at least five days have elapsed after the concrete thrust blocking was installed.

3.10.2 Leakage Test

A leakage test shall be conducted after the pressure test has been satisfactorily completed. The

Contractor shall furnish all necessary gages and measuring devices, pumps and apparatus and labor for conducting the test. The duration of each leakage test shall be two hours, and during the test, the pipe shall be subjected to the normal working pressure for the section of line being tested. These pressures will be based upon the lowest point of the section of line under test. Leakage is defined as the quantity of water to be supplied to the newly laid pipe, or any valved section thereof, necessary to maintain the specified leakage test pressure after the pipe has been filled with water and the air expelled. No pipe installation will be accepted until the leakage is less than the number of liters per hour as determined by the following formula:

L = ND times the square root of P in which: L equals the allowable leakage, in liters per hours, N is the number of field joints in the length of pipeline tested, D is the nominal diameter of the pipe in mm and P is the average test pressure during the leakage test, in kg/sq.cm gauge. Should any test on pipe laid disclose leakage greater than specified above, the Contractor shall, at his own expense, locate and repair the line until the leakage is within the specified allowance.

3.10.3 Operational Test

Prior to acceptance, an operational test of all control systems shall be performed to determine if the installed equipment meets the purpose and intent of the specifications. Tests shall demonstrate that the equipment is not electrically, mechanically, structurally, or otherwise defective; is in safe and satisfactory operating condition; and conforms with the specified operating characteristics. Prior to applying electrical power to any motor driven equipment, the drive train shall be rotated by hand to demonstrate free operation of all mechanical parts. Tests shall include checks for excessive vibration, leaks in all piping and seals, correct operation of control systems and equipment, proper alignment, excessive noise levels, and power consumption.

3.10.4 Retesting

If any deficiencies are revealed during any test, such deficiencies shall be corrected and the tests shall be reconducted.

3.10.5 Manufacturer's Services

Services of a manufacturer's representative who is experienced in the installation, adjustment, and operation of the equipment specified shall be provided. The representative shall supervise the installation, adjustment, and testing of the equipment.
