BUFFETS/CHINA CABINETS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS #2
Q: Since we are an American company doing business with an American base, is there additional responsibilities regarding exporting to Japan i.e. additional duties, taxes and VAT fees? Would you be responsible for those fees once ported to you or are the fees waved due to a military base? My company does not typically pay those fees and I am not familiar with Japan's requirements with imports/exports.
A: Per the SOFA Agreement with Japan:
Article XI of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between Japan and the United States, authorizes the United States entry into Japan free from Japanese customs duties and all other charges on materials, supplies and equipment imported for the official use of the United States
Armed Forces or for the exclusive use of such forces or ultimately to be incorporated into articles or facilities used by such forces.
