About this file
This document is an informational file about the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), a comprehensive standard for pressure equipment management. The NBIC is an internationally recognized framework structured into four key parts: Installation, Inspection, Repairs & Alterations, and Pressure Relief Devices. It provides detailed guidelines for ensuring the safe installation, inspection, maintenance, and modification of pressure-retaining equipment, with updates conducted every two years by a consensus committee of industry experts.
In the context of the related federal contract opportunity (Solicitation Number: FA521525Q0020), this document provides background technical standards that would likely inform the boiler inspection requirements for King Salmon Long Range Radar Site and Eareckson Air Station. The NBIC certification appears directly relevant to the Department of the Air Force Pacific Air Forces' upcoming comprehensive inspection of 39 boiler units, as it establishes the professional standards and methodological approach for conducting thorough and safe pressure equipment assessments.

National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) Certification
The National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) is an internationally recognized standard that governs the installation, inspection, repair, and alteration of in-service pressure equipment. It is widely adopted in the U.S. and Canada and serves as the foundation for several accreditation programs.
The NBIC is structured into four parts:
1. Installation – Covers requirements for ensuring pressure-retaining items are installed correctly and function safely.
2. Inspection – Provides guidelines for performing and documenting inspections, including safety measures and risk assessments.
3. Repairs & Alterations – Outlines acceptable methods for repairing or modifying pressure-retaining items.
4. Pressure Relief Devices – Details installation, inspection, and repair procedures for pressure relief devices.
The NBIC is updated every two years by a consensus committee of industry experts. You can find more details on the National Board website.
