Jiro TOMIKAWA / DSN: 243-0807 / Fax: 243-0800 Commercial: 046-816-0807 / Fax: 046-816-0800 / Email: jiro.tomikawa.ja@fe.navy.mil

Mr. Nishimura of JFRC explained the structure of pressed bending iron-tie during the site-examination on 15FEB12. The structure of pressed bending iron-tie is not solid and is depression hollowed out by pressed bending method, while the iron-tie is C-shaped cross-section. In case of the pandrol rail fastening that was welded on the pressed bending iron-tie, there is an inspection hole at each pandrol rail fastening at both end of the pressed bending iron-tie, so that inspector will be able to visually check the top level of compacted gravel under the iron-tie through the inspection holes by using the tape measure or straight stick which is one (1) foot long.

Therefore, if the situation that the bottom part of pressed bending iron-tie is buried in the gravel at sidetrack with inadequate vibration compacting method by rammers (tie-tampers), the both ends of pressed bending iron-tie will be covered by gravel, however, the iron-tie is very easy to move by the vibration by tank cars and switch-engine moving due to the lesser frictions that is a safety hazard condition that lesser gravel is compacted under the iron-tie. In order to ensure the proper installing pressed bending iron-tie, the approved safety guideline was instructed by Mr. Nishimura of JFRC. The approved safety guideline by JFRC is that the top level of compacted gravel that is under the pressed bending iron-tie from inspection hole must be less than approximately ten (10) centimeters (4-inches) by using tape measure or straight stick, so that the inspector will be able to visually check the level of compacted gravel from inspection hole. If the depth of compacted gravel from inspection hole is much deeper than approximately ten (10) centimeters (4-inches) by inserting the tape measure or straight stick, the pressed bending iron-tie must be removed and reinstalled by using rammers (tie-tampers) again in order to prevent the derailing for JR-Switch Engine and tank cars for safety reasons. Otherwise, JFRC will request the contractor to remove and reinstall the pressed bending iron-tie for safety reasons.
