Q&A v2 Air Show Sound FA486119QA035
• What is the desired range of the UHF/VHF hand-held radios? We are assuming the aircraft will fly multiple miles away.
a). Yes, aircraft will be multiple miles away while approaching show center, plan accordingly
• Is there a drawing available showing the audience area (to determine how to design sound coverage), placement of stage, and the desired placement of sound towers?
a). A reference map is attached. The announcer area is near #36 on the map. Sound towers will need to be placed accordingly in order for the crowd to hear clearly
• Are there pictures from previous events that show the audience area, and preferably any speaker towers used? If speaker towers are not seen, what is the maximum height permitted for the towers? Are there adjacent buildings on which some speakers could be placed so as not to raise a tower that could block the audience's view?
a). The audience area is the entire air show area. Speakers will NOT be placed on any buildings.
Maximum height is 15’
• We understand the audience area is 4500 feet long. How wide is it? Is the audience area a straight line or does it curve?
a). See map, the entire air show area is between #s 24 and 46. Show Center where bleachers will be located is between #35 - #39, the air show/audience away from stage center (north) does have a dog legged bend.
• Will bleachers be used? If so, for how big of an area? If used, they could eliminate a large chunk of the need for towers in that section of the audience area, as speakers could be ground-stacked (either right on the ground or on small platforms) when using bleachers.
a). Yes bleachers will be used, see map.
• A high-end speaker system producing clear sound (even if only for narration and occasional music) is unable to provide even sound coverage of 4500 feet with only four to five speaker towers. The best systems that exist can throw sound ~230 feet, meaning 20 towers would be needed. The towers can be designed so as to block as little as possible of the audience view. Knowing the width of the space and having the above drawings of the space would help tremendously. Also, the existence of any adjacent buildings will help, not only for speaker placement but also because surrounding walls contain the sound in the space, helping it travel slightly farther.
a). See map, plan accordingly
• Wireless transmission over 4500 feet with thousands of individuals (using a multitude of wireless devices) and on-going air operations (using additional wireless equipment) requires specific gear to protect it from interference, and is thus considerably more expensive than using a wired solution. Is the desire for wireless mainly to prevent people tripping on cables? If so, we can provide solutions for that for consideration. However, if the reason is something else and the budget premium is not an issue, than we will plan accordingly.
A). Per the SOW, On the crowd line while wireless capabilities are preferred, the contractor may also use entirely or partially wired speakers and cable.
