STATEMENT OF WORK – TYNDALL AFB
Objective
This document establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, and installation, for one mechanical-assist, mobile storage system with Modular Cabinets for Tyndall AFB.
System Description
One mechanical-assist, mobile storage system shall be utilized to store hand lift able items. The system shall be installed according to attached drawing and shall consist of the following components:
A. Carriages, including drive train B. Rails C. Elevated flooring D. Ramps E. Anti-movement locks F. Modular cabinets G. Mechanical fasteners, anchors, and all other items required to install the mobile storage system.
Performance and physical characteristics
Each carriage shall have a crank mechanism. The crank mechanism shall be turned manually clockwise or counterclockwise to move the carriage in the desired direction. No more than five pounds or force on the crank shall be required to move a fully loaded carriage.
Carriages
Carriages shall consist of a frame and drive train, upon which modular cabinets shall be installed. These carriages shall be capable of supporting a minimum load of 1,000 pounds per carriage foot. No system component shall deflect greater than 0.5 percent of the distance between supports when fully loaded. No component shall exhibit permanent deformation after the maximum load has been removed.
Frame
The frame shall consist of aluminum or steel channel, welded or bolted together to support a fully loaded modular cabinet section. Cross bracing shall ensure rigidity. Bumpers shall be mounted on the frame, spaced appropriately to minimize carriage contact. The frame shall be designed for an integral drive train.
Drive chain
Drive chain shall connect a set of gear reduction sprockets from the crank shaft to the drive shaft.
Drive shafts
Drive shafts shall be made of steel and have a minimum diameter of ¾ inch. Splices or connections to other sections of the drive shaft, drive wheels, and gears shall be slotted of key joints or use shoulder bolts. Drive shafts shall run through pillow block or flanged bearings on either side of the drive wheel.
Slave drive shafts shall be driven by used of sprockets and chain from the main drive shaft.
Bearings
Bearings shall have a static load rating equal to or greater than the maximum bearing loading, including applicable safety factors, under all operating conditions. Bearings shall be permanently lubricated, securely mounted, and properly housed for protection from physical damage.
Wheels
Each carriage shall have two wheels per rail. Each carriage shall have at least two drive wheels and at least two guide wheels (drive wheels may also act as guide wheels). All wheels shall be balanced, hardened steel. Wheels which are connected to the drive shaft shall be slotted for key joints. Wheels shall be capable of supporting the fully loaded carriage. Wheels shall not slide or lose contact with the rail.
Guidance system
All carriages shall use flanged wheels or guide bearings for guidance over the rails. If flanged wheels are used, each carriage shall have a minimum of two flanged guide wheels. If guide bearings are used, then each carriage shall have a minimum of four sets of guide bearings. Guide bearings shall be precision machined and permanently lubricated.
Face panels & end panels
Face panels shall be fastened to the end of the modular cabinet section (both carriage unit and stationary platform). Face panels shall provide a rigid mounting location for the cranks and card holders. The face panels shall cover the entire width and height of the shelving section sides. An end panel shall be provided. The end panels shall cover the entire width and height of the modular cabinet section.
Rail Installation
The carriages shall move over steel rail assemblies located on the top of the floor. After leveling the rails, load bearing grout shall be used to fill any gaps between the rail assemblies and the existing floor.
Elevated flooring
The contractor shall install elevated flooring for the mobile storage system. Elevated flooring shall be fire retardant plywood, which is able to support a load of 75 pounds per square foot. A covering (such as “Endura” or equivalent) shall be installed on top of the plywood panels. Flooring shall be sized to fit between rails, level with the top of the rails, in order to provide a safe walking surface for personnel.
Adjacent sheets of subflooring shall be shimmed along the full length of the common side.
End stops
End stops shall be installed to prevent the end carriage from running off the rails. These end stops shall be securely anchored to the rail or the floor.
Ramps
Metal ramps shall be installed in the system, which allow an easy transition to the elevated flooring. The ramps shall not extend past the end of the carriages into the main aisle. The grade on these ramps shall not exceed 10 percent.
Anti-Movement Lock
Each carriage shall be equipped with a mechanism which will lock the carriage in place while the operator is in the aisle.
Security lock
A security lock shall be provided. This lock shall allow the mobile storage system to be secured when all carriages are moved together so that there is no open aisle. One key shall be provided for this lock.
Modular Cabinets
System description
The modular cabinet system shall interface with the mechanical-assist, mobile storage system and include 6 pass through cabinets, 6 overhead pass through cabinets, 2 regular cabinets with 2 overhead cabinets and 4 bookcase cabinets. The modular cabinets will be accessed manually to store and retrieve items.
Total system height cannot be greater than 88”.

Cabinet housing load capacity
Each drawer cabinet housing shall be capable of supporting a minimum static load of 10,000 pounds.
Shelves
Each shelf shall have a minimum capacity of 400 pounds. Shelves shall be adjustable on maximum increments of one inch and adjustment shall not require the use of tools. When fully loaded, a shelf shall deflect no more that 0.50 inch from the unloaded position.
Base enclosure
Each cabinet shall have removable base enclosure plates to cover the front and rear of the pallet base.
Alignment
After assembly, the storage units shall be capable of maintaining the same position in all loaded conditions. Alignment of each row of storage units shall be in two directions: down the row of storage units, maintaining the proper aisle width between adjacent rows of storage units; and vertically for each drawer/shelf cabinet face.
Storage unit vertical alignment
Each storage unit face shall be plump to within 1/8 inch from the floor to the top of the unit.
Overhead shelving unit
An overhead shelving unit shall be provided on top of cabinet housing as shown on attached drawing. The overhead shelving unit shall be 27 inches high and have the same bottom dimensions as the cabinet housing below. The shelving unit shall have two shelves (one bottom shelf and one intermediate shelf).
Each shelf shall have a load capacity of 400 pounds. The intermediate shelf shall have an adjustable height. The shelving units shall be bolted to the top of the lower cabinet housing.
