About this file

This is a Salient Characteristics document that specifies the requirements for a B-21 Low Observable Maintenance (LO) Fume Hood to be installed in a HAZMAT Room for the Department of the Air Force Air Combat Command. The document outlines detailed technical specifications for a fume hood used for mixing paint kits and proper de-gas of paint.

The required fume hood must be 4 feet wide with a 48-inch work depth and height, featuring OSHA-approved low flow velocities of 50-60 feet per minute. Key specifications include: a 12-inch nominal duct connection, 115V/230V electrical service options, an Opti-Zone Rear Downflow Dual Baffle System, energy-efficient LED lighting, and removable baffles for cleaning. The unit must be shipped fully assembled, include easy-access maintenance features, and be delivered within 180 days after receipt of order (ARO). Safety features include a Flush Foil for maximum containment and an Upper Dilution Air Supply system. The fume hood must be designed to minimize turbulence and reduce chemical concentrations in the work area while providing superior containment of toxic and noxious materials.

Salient Characteristics List

B-21 Low Observable Maintenance (LO) Fume Hood for HAZMAT Room

BACKGROUND: LO Hazardous Storage room requires fume hoods for mixing paint kits and proper de-gas of paint.

OBJECTIVES: Attain Fume hoods that are no greater than 4 feet wide and have a work depth and height of 48 inches to provide sufficient workspace.

REQUIREMENTS: Provide the specifications listed below.

DELIVERY: Delivery shall occur within 180 days ARO.

Characteristics of Fume Hood: Supply LO with one Fume Hood.

General Requirements

1. The fume hood shall provide superior containment of toxic, noxious, or other harmful materials when properly installed.

2. The fume hood shall meet OSHA approved "low flow" velocities as low as 50-60 feet per minute.

3. The fume hood shall be designed to minimize turbulence and reduce chemical concentrations through the work area.

Exhaust Requirements

1. The exhaust duct connection shall be designed for a 12" nominal duct (12.75" OD) to allow for minimum static pressure loss while operating at 50 to 100 fpm face velocities.

2. The exhaust volume and fume hood static pressure loss shall be listed for each hood model at two sash heights and for face velocities from 40 to 100 fpm.

Electrical Requirements

1. The fume hood shall be wired for 115 Volt, 50/60 Hz, 20 Amp or 230Volt, 50/60 Hz, 10 Amp electrical service.

Size and Configuration

1. The fume hood shall be 4 ft wide.

Attachment 2 – Salient Characteristics (Amended)

2. The fume hood shall have a large usable interior work depth and interior height of 48" to provide ample working space.

3. The fume hood shall have a by-pass airflow design that promotes full containment as the sash is moved.

Safety Features

1. The fume hood shall have an Opti-Zone Rear Downflow Dual Baffle System that directs horizontal streams of airflow to the rear slots of the primary baffle in a single pass.

2. The fume hood shall have removable baffles for cleaning.

3. The fume hood shall have a Flush Foil that allow air to sweep the work surface for maximum containment.

Lighting and Accessories

1. The fume hood shall have energy-efficient LED lighting located behind a laminated safety glass shield mounted to the top of the hood.

2. The fume hood shall have an Upper Dilution Air Supply that provides bypass air from above the work area.

Installation and Maintenance

1. The fume hood shall be shipped fully assembled and eliminate the need for costly onsite assembly.

2. The fume hood shall be designed to easily break down for transport through doorways if needed.

3. The fume hood shall have removable access cover plates for easy access to plumbing valves and sash adjustment hardware.
