ROOF MEMBRANE INSTALLATION 24

Starting at low point or drain, torch apply membrane maintaining minimum 3” side laps and 6” end laps. Offset end 26 laps 3’ minimum, and stagger laps between layers. Torch apply the sheet by passing the flame of the torch evenly 27 across the face of the roll. Heat the sheet with the torch until it develops a sheen or glossy appearance. Apply 28 heat to the seam area of the previously-installed sheet as well just before applying the roll. The welding 29 temperature is usually correct when a flow of asphalt approximately 1/2" wide is seen coming from the 3" side lap. 30 If the asphalt starts to flow excessively during torching (more than 2"), the torching is proceeding too slowly. 31 Roll all sheets in a straight line so that no kinks or fish mouths result and sheets are laid completely flat. 33 Cut all "fishmouths" created and patch with a piece of roofing felt at the end of each day. 35 Extend BUR membrane to the top of all curbs and 4" above the top of the cant at vertical walls. 37 Provide a folded-back envelope at edges and penetrations of BUR membrane to provide positive protection 39 against flow of rainwater into building or off the edge. Seal corners and other interruptions of envelope with large 40 beads of roofing cement to provide positive protection against flow of rainwater. 41

ACCESSORIES 43

Where small roof accessories are set on built-up roofing membrane, set metal flanges in a bed of roofing cement, 45 and seal penetration of membrane with a bead of roofing cement. 46

ROOF DRAINS 48

Install layer of membrane into drain under clamping ring. 50 Install 27” x 27” lead set in asphalt roof cement under clamping ring. Prime lead flashing and allow primer to dry. 52 Install strip-in ply of membrane in hot asphalt extending 6” past outer edge of lead flashing and under clamping 54 ring. 55

METAL DETAILS - MISCELLANEOUS 57

Miscellaneous sheet metal accessory items, which are coordinated with the BUR installation, if any, are specified 59

102-029 07 52 00-7 in other sections of these specifications. 1 Install new 4 pound lead over all soil stacks with the top portion turned down and inside the soil stack pipe. Prime 3 the lead flange with asphalt primer and permit to dry. Apply membrane over the flange and up the pipe. 4

TEMPORARY WATER CUTOFFS 6

Temporary water cutoffs are to be constructed at the end of each working day to protect the roofing, building, and 8 building interior from damage due to wind, snow, and rain. Temporary water cutoffs are to be constructed with 9 roofing cement unless otherwise specifically approved by the Government Construction Representative. 10 Temporary water cutoffs shall be detailed by the Roofing Contractor and approved by the manufacturer and the 12 Government Construction Representative. 13 All temporary water cutoffs shall be removed at the commencement of work the next working day. 15

VERIFICATION 17

Inspect all membrane and flashing seams prior to notification of completion. All loose or separated seams shall be 19 repaired prior to acceptance of the project. 20

SAMPLING AND TESTING 22

The Government Construction Representative may require test cuts at any time during the construction process to 24 determine if the Roofing Contractor has complied with all aspects of the specifications. 25 When directed by the Government Construction Representative, proceed with additional or remedial work as 27 required to compensate for deficiencies. 28

PROTECTION OF ROOFING 30

Upon completion of roofing work, including associated work, Roofing Contractor shall advise the General 32 Contractor of recommended procedures for surveillance and protection of roofing during remainder of construction 33 period. At end of construction period, or at a time when remaining construction work will in no way affect or 34 endanger roofing (at Roofing Contractor's option), installer shall make a final inspection of roofing and prepare a 35 written report to be given to the General Contractor, with copies to the Government Construction Representative, 36 describing nature and extent of deterioration of any damage found in the work. 37 Roofing Contractor shall repair or replace, as required, deteriorated or defective work found at the time of final 39 inspection. Installer shall be engaged by the Roofing Contractor to repair damage to roofing which occurred 40 subsequent to roofing installation but prior to final inspection. Repair or replace roofing and associated work to a 41 condition free of damage and deterioration at the time of Substantial Completion. 42
