KB-50 and C-119 Dismantling, Crating, Transportation and Reassembly

Question and Answers

Question 1 (Q1): Are the engine and wings "fly ready"? Do they have all the nuts and bolts or is there only enough to hold the engine and wings in place?

Answer 1 (A1): The KB-50 is fully assembled. All hardware is supposed to be installed.

Q2: Since the B-50 is a WWII plane the tooling is going to be hard to find. Is there an alternate solution?

A2: You may need to improvise something but that is ok as long as the part can be reattached.

Most of the parts should be Rivets, nut and bolts.

Q3: The reassembly for the B-50 is it in an indoor or outdoor museum?

Is the contractor going to have to stage the plane for a display (hanging in the air or put on a platform, etc.)?

A3: This will be an outdoor aircraft that will not be placed on a pedestal or suspended from the ceiling.

Q4: Will there be airport badging & escorts?

A4: Both locations will need to have either badges or escorts. This is something that will be required the be coordinated prior to arriving at the Base. Security Forces at each base should be able to assist with that.

Q5: Work locations?

A5: The KB-50 is just inside the gate off to the right hand side of the road in a park. The C-119 is on the south base ramp by the other Museum Aircraft. Although the ramp does not require a restricted area badge the area around it will not allow to take pictures it is under video surveillance.

Q6: Work hours of operation?

A6: I don't know the hours of operations for MacDill the Security Forces there should be able to assist with that. Edwards is a Monday thru Friday Daylight operation. But you should be able to work at night and weekends. You will not have support from the base during off hours.

Q7: Will driving (POV) on airport/base be allowed?

A7: Yes, you will be able to drive POV's on base with proper clearances

Q8: Will Aircraft manuals be provided?

A8: No manuals are available for either aircraft.

Q9: Tooling to disassemble aircraft & engines?

DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE

436th Contracting Squadron (AMC)

639 Atlantic Street Dover AFB, Delaware 19902-5639

A9: This is up to the contractor. They are supposed to have to knowledge to disassemble to aircraft

Q10: Site visit to see aircraft before the bid process (if it goes to bid)?

A10: This is up to the contracting office at MacDill and Edwards. I would advise a site visit to get the exact measurements for the move to coordinate the permits

Q11: Aircraft cradles?

A11: Provided by the contractor

Q12: Aircraft shoring?

A12: Provided by the contractor

Q13: Will hot works be authorized? (The PWS states no if it hinders the reassembly)

A13: If you're are talking about welding and torches this has to be established by the base where the aircraft are located. Each base is different. But anything that is removed for the aircraft has to be able to be reattached!

Q14: Will there be any support from the military (assuming this is on a military base)?

A14: The only support might be maintenance stands and guidance to the location. This will be based on the missions needs of each base.

Q15: How far are we allowed to disassemble the aircraft, or is that up to the contractor?

A15: This is up to the contractor based of the need to transport it on the roads.

Q16: The PWS states that there MAY be hazardous materials on the plane. Do you know possibly what those might be? Some transportation permits may take longer to get, depending on what type of materials are still on the plane. This will be important to know ahead of time.

A16: Most of the hazardous material is oils and hydraulic fluids. All fuel has evaporated or been drained. No batteries.

Q17: Can you provide a detailed description of the work required for both projects?

A17: The KB-50 is to be disassembled and prepared for transport to Dover AFB by way to truck.

Then re-assembled here at Dover AFB to be place on display. That will mean the tail and wings will need to be removed. The engines will also need to be removed along with the propellers (if they need to be removed)

Q18: Is the C-119 intact or already dismantled?

A18: The C-119 has been Disassembled. The fuselage is already in a cradle. The wing box has been separated into 2 pieces. The Engines are removed with propellers still attached. A total of 5 pieces.
