About this file
This is a Questions & Answers document dated February 20, 2025, for solicitation FA442725Q1027 regarding a Tool Etching System for Travis Air Force Base, CA. The document addresses three key technical questions about the laser engraving system requirements.
The answers clarify that while a Class 4 laser system is requested, it must include an enclosure to reduce it to a Class 1 safety classification. The system will be used for etching aircraft maintenance tools and specialty equipment made of various metals (including chrome alloys) and plastic tool handles. The primary purpose is tool accountability through etching identification marks, with a secondary use for marking in-shop funded going-away gifts. The depth of etching is specified only as "deep enough to provide clear marking" for tool box or kit identification. No specific pricing information or award terms are included in this Q&A document.

SOLICITATION QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
FA442725Q1027 – TOOL ETCHING SYSTEM - TRAVIS AFB, CA
Question Answer
1. There is a discrepancy in the request that I need clarity
on. The request is for a Class 4 laser engraving system (which would be a laser without an enclosure), yet under the “scope” it is stated that an enclosure station is required. The sample brochure provided (Boss laser) also does not show an ENCLOSURE station, rather just a mounting station. What is the actual need? An enclosure by it’s very definition, would fully enclose the laser, making it Class 1 laser safety compliant. We have 3 variants on for which the best solution would usually be determined by largest possible part size. A mounting table/cart/rack would be something different – not providing an ENCLOSED space (and thus cannot be called an enclosure). Please clarify.
The enclosure would need to be added to the purchase if the laser marking system does not already include one, it’s a safety item that reduces the system’s classification to a safer “Class 1” type laser. It’s literally a cover that goes over the laser and item being etched while in use.
2. What is the material being marked? Depth of mark needed? We would be etching aircraft maintenance tools and specialty equipment made of various metals (Snap on hand tools are made of chrome alloys but I cannot confirm all our hand tools). Some tools would need to be etched on handles made of various plastics.
The depth of the mark needed is hard to say because most items are only etched deep enough to provide a clear marking annotating which tool box or kit it belongs to.
3. Application of the Laser engraving system? See above. Tool accountability is the main purpose behind etching tools and equipment.
It would also be used to etching/marking in-shop funded going away gifts.
