IDC Base Roof Repair
DIVISION 6 – WOOD & PLASTIC
SECTION 06100 – ROUGH CARPENTRY
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.01 SCOPE: Work included under this section shall consist of, but not be limited to, providing all labor, materials, methods, tools, machinery and equipment for carpentry work required for reroof housing as shown on the drawings and as specified in these specifications.

1.03 DELIVERY AND STORAGE: Materials shall be delivered to the site in an undamaged condition. Materials shall be carefully stored off the ground to provide proper ventilation, drainage, and protection against dampness. Defective and damaged materials shall be replaced by the contractor at no expense to the Government.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
A. Grading and Marking: Materials shall bear the grademark, stamp or other identifying marks indicating grades of material and rules or standards under which produced. Such identifying marks on material shall be in accordance with the rule or standard under which the material is produced, including requirements for qualifications and authority of the inspection organization, usage or authorized identification, and information included in the identification. The inspection agency for lumber shall be certified by the Board of Review, American Lumber Standards Committee, to grade species used. Except for structural laminated members, plywood, and lumber; bundle marking or certificates will be permitted in lieu of marking each individual piece.
B. Sizes: Lumber sizes shall conform to Prod. Std. PS 20, and unless otherwise specified, lumber shall be surfaced on four sides. Sizes for materials other than lumber shall conform to requirements of the rules or standards under which produced. Size references, unless otherwise specified are nominal sizes, and actual sizes shall be within manufacturing tolerances allowed by the standard under which the product is produced.
C. Moisture Content: At the time lumber and other materials are delivered and when installed in the work their moisture content shall be as follows:
D. Treated and Untreated Lumber 2 Inches or Less in Thickness, Except Roof Planking:
19 percent maximum.
E. Treated and Untreated Lumber Over 2 Inches in Thickness, Except Roof Planking:
25 percent maximum.
F. Roof Planking 2 Inches or More in Thickness: 15 percent maximum.
G. Materials Other Than Lumber: In accordance with standard under which product is produced.

SUBMITTALS:
A. Materials: The following materials shall be submitted for approval:
1. Accessories and Nails: Two of each accessory and four of each kind of nail with description of application for each.
2. Sheathing, Subflooring and Underlayment: Two square feet of material to be used for each application and manufacturer’s installation instructions.
B. Shop Drawings: Shop drawings of structural glued laminated members, fabricated wood trusses and other fabricated structural members shall be submitted in accordance with the SPECIAL PROVISIONS. Shop drawings shall indicate materials, details of construction, methods of fastening, and erection details. Shop drawings shall be accompanied by a reference to design criteria used and stress computations.
1.06 REJECTION: The Contracting Officer may deny permission for the use of a wood member where permissible grade characteristics or defects are present in such a combination that they affect the serviceability or appearance of the member. All rejected material shall be removed and replaced with new material at no additional cost to the Government.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.01 FRAMING LUMBER shall be Douglas fir – larch, No. 1 grade, conforming to the grading rules of the Western Woods Product Association.
2.02 ROOF DECKING shall be plywood graded C-C Ext-APA and shall conform to the requirements of U.S. Department of Commerce PS-1.
2.03 Lumber incorporated into the roof system (e.g., nailers, cants, pipe supports, sleepers, blocking, etc.) shall be Douglas fir – larch or all heart redwood, No. 2 grade or better.
2.04 FASCIA BOARDS shall be kiln dried clear, all heart, redwood.
2.05 TRUSSED RAFTERS: As an option to standard rafters, trussed rafters may be provided. The design shall be as indicated. Connections shall be made with light-metal plate- connectors. Light-metal-plate-connected wood trusses shall be designed in conformance with TPI Design Specifications for Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses and fabricated in conformance with the TPI Quality Control Manual. When new plate configuration is proposed, load testing of trusses is required and shall conform to Appendix D of TPI Design Specifications for Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses.
2.06 NONSTRESS GRADED MEMBERS: Members shall include plates, caps, bucks, studs, blockings, nailer, sleepers and grounds. Members shall be standard grade or No. 2 grade except studs may be stud grade. Nonstress member grades shall conform to the National Grading Rule for Dimension Lumber established in conformance with Prod. Std. PS 20 and as applied in individual grading rules of applicable grading agencies. For species graded under other grading rules, grade used shall be equivalent to grades outlined above. Sizes shall be as follows unless otherwise shown:

2.07 GENERAL USE PLYWOOD: Prod. Std. PS 1, C-D Exterior grade and thickness as shown.
2.08 SHEATHING: Either plywood, structural-use panels, or wood for roof sheathing.
A. Plywood: Prod. Std. PS 1, grade C-D for wall sheathing, grade C-D with exterior glue for roof sheathing. Wall sheathing shall be 4 feet wide, 3/8-inch thick for supports 16 inches on center without corner bracing of framing, and ½-inch thick for supports 24 inches on center without corner bracing of framing. Roof sheathing shall be 1/2-inch minimum thickness with an Identification Index of 24/0 or greater for supports 16 inches on center and 5/8-inch minimum thickness with an Identification Index of 32/16 or greater for supports 24 inches on center.
B. Structural-Use Panels: Panels shall meet the qualification requirements of APA Performance Standards and Policies for Structural-Use Panels. Panels shall conform to APA Product Guide for Performance Rated Panels for Sheathing Exp 1 or 2 or Ept 1 or Ext. Sheathing for roofs and for walls without corner bracing of framing shall have a Span Rating of 16/0 or greater for supports 16 inches on center, and shall have a Span Rating of 24/0 or greater for supports 24 inches on center.
C. Wood: Species and grade shall be in accordance with TABLE 1 at the end of this section; center-matched, shiplapped, or square edge, except exposed roof sheathing shall be V-jointed, matched, and dressed. Wall sheathing shall be 1-inch thick for supports 16 or 24 inches on center without corner bracing of framing provided sheathing is applied diagonally. Roof sheathing shall be 1-inch thick for supports 16 or 24 inches on center.
2.09 PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT shall be as follows:
A. Framing lumber, exterior trim, soffits, and wood exposed to view: Do not treat with preservatives.
B. Roof decking and Douglas fir – larch lumber incorporated into the roof system: AWPB specification LP-22 standard for lumber, timber, and plywood pressure treated with water-borne preservatives for ground contact use. (July, 1975), except, do not use acid copper chromate (ACC) preservative.
C. The care of preservative treated wood shall be as specified in AWPA M4, except that soaking shall be the only method used to retreat exposed areas of treated wood that have been cut or drilled after the original treatment.
2.10 NAILS: Nails used shall be hot dip galvanized steel wire, conforming to Federal Specification FF-N-105B, Type II, Style 10.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSPECTION: After removal of existing built-up roofing, galvanized metal flashing, gravel stops, and the exposed roof deck shall be inspected by the contractor for signs of deterioration. Any deteriorated areas shall be marked and brought to the attention of the Government. Deteriorated roof decking shall be removed and replaced with new truss system and roof decking as directed by the Contracting Officer or his/her designated representative.
3.02 INSTALLATION: All carpentry work shall be fitted closely, set accurately to the required lines and levels, and shall be secured in place in a rigid and substantial manner. All members shall be framed, anchored, tied, and braced so as to develop the strength and rigidity necessary for the purpose for which they are used. Framing members shall not be spliced between bearing points. Joists, rafters, and purlins shall be set with their crown edge up. All framing members not indicated or specified shall be provided as necessary for the proper completion of the work.
Where detailed nailing requirements are not specified, nail spacing shall be sufficient to develop an adequate strength for the connection without splitting the members. Nails that are coming out of existing roof decking shall be reset. Existing roof decking that has not been properly nailed to rafters shall be properly nailed to rafters prior to application of roofing materials. New roof decking shall be nailed in place with end joints tightly butted.
A. Blocking: Blocking shall be provided as necessary for application of siding, sheathing, subflooring, wallboard, and other materials or building items, and to provide fire stopping. Blocking shall be cut to fit between framing members and rigidly nailed thereto.
B. Sheathing:
1. Plywood Sheathing: Sheathing shall be applied with edges 1/8-inch apart at side joints and 1/16-inch apart at end joints, and nailed at supported edges at 6 inches on center and at intermediate supports 12 inches on center. Nailing of edges shall be 3/8-inch from the edges. Wall sheathing shall extend over top and bottom plates, and if applied horizontally the vertical joints shall be made over supports and staggered. Roof sheathing shall have face grain at right angles to supports, end joints made over supports, and end joints staggered.
2. Structural-Use Panels: Panels shall be applied with edges ¼-inch apart at side joints and 1/8-inch apart at end joints, and nailed at supported edges at 6 inches on center and at intermediate supports 12 inches on center. Nailing of edges shall be 3/8-inch from the edges. Wall sheathing shall extend over top and bottom plates, and if applied horizontally the vertical joints shall be made over supports and staggered. Roof sheathing shall have end joints made over supports, and end joints staggered.
3. Wood Sheathing: Sheathing end joints shall be made over framing members and so alternated that there will be at least two boards between joints on the same support. Each board shall bear on at least three supports. Boards shall be nailed at each support using two nails for boards 8 inches and less in width and three nails for boards more than 8 inches in width.
