The contractor shall provide all labor, materials, equipment, and supervision to build and install the trainer on an existing concrete pad at the Louis F. Garland Fire Training Academy. The trainer will include two rooms measuring 10 feet by 20 feet with inward swinging doors and windows, as well as 4-foot by 4-foot cut-in areas in the floors covered by sheet metal. Trainees will practice cutting through replaceable 2x4 boards in the cut-in areas but not the sheet metal covers, which will remain in place for safety. Questions and Answers – 2020-08

Statement of Work Questions

Section 11, paragraph b(2)(A) and (C): “Room 1 and 3 will be 10 feet by 20 feet with an inward swinging door leading in from the hallway. There will be double hung window on the wall across from the door. Between the door and the window there will be a cut-in trainer 4 feet by 4 feet with a sheet metal cover. Cut-In trainer will have metal frame, in will have a single 2” x 4” in the center running in line with the hallway. This 2” x 4” will be able to be replace, without the use of tools, prior to each student performing their training operations. This will open into the room below, there will need to be a safety catch constructed below the opening to allow debris to pass through but prevent personnel from falling through.

Q1. The 4’ x 4’ square hole in the floor with a wooden 2” x 4” flush with the floor that they will cut through. Our 4’ x 4’ frame will be metal: Is that sheet metal flat on the floor? So in essence are they simulating a cut through a metal floor or roof? Will they be cutting through that each time as well and will be replaced with the 2” x 4”?

A1. They will be cutting plywood. The sheet metal cover will cover the hole when not in use as a safety, no metal will be cut. Single line drawing provided is similar to what we currently have in place. This is a concept drawing.

Q2. As far as a debris catch under it, I don’t have a feel for it: Would they want a lever to open the catch basin which drops everything down to the first floor after cutting?

A2. This is a safety catch as stated above. Its purpose is to prevent students from falling through.

Needs to be porous enough to let small chips of wood to pass through.
