About this file
Summary: Salient Characteristics Document for PCB Prototyping System
This document specifies the salient characteristics and performance requirements for a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) prototyping system intended to support in-house rapid prototyping, milling, drilling, and routing operations. The equipment must meet or exceed defined physical, functional, and performance specifications across three primary categories.
Functional and Performance Requirements: The system must achieve a maximum milling spindle speed of at least 60,000 RPM to process fine structures down to 100 micrometers. Mechanical resolution must be a minimum of 0.47 micrometers (0.02 mil) in the X/Y axes and 0.2 micrometers in the Z axis, with repeatability/precision tolerance maintained at ±5 micrometers (±0.2 mil). The equipment requires a fully automatic tool changing system capable of holding and cycling a minimum of 15 tools simultaneously without operator intervention, sensor-controlled automatic milling depth and width adjustment, and an integrated camera system for automatic optical fiducial recognition, board alignment, and tool change monitoring.
Physical and Operational Requirements: The system must accommodate working areas up to 305 mm x 229 mm x 8 mm (12" x 9" x 0.3") and physically accommodate substrates up to 330 mm x 250 mm x 26 mm (13" x 9.8" x 1"). The machine base must be constructed of heavy granite or equivalent high-density, vibration-dampening material to ensure geometric accuracy during high-speed operations. Additional requirements include an integrated vacuum table system for workholding, dispensing capability or compatibility with solder paste dispensing units, integrated CAM/system software capable of importing standard CAD data and managing material parameter libraries, and pneumatic self-cleaning functionality for the spindle and milling depth sensor to support low-maintenance operation.

Salient Characteristics Document for PCB Prototyping System
The requested equipment is required to support in-house rapid prototyping, milling, drilling, and routing of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). To meet mission requirements, submission must meet or exceed the physical, functional, and performance characteristics outlined below.
1. Essential Functional and Performance Characteristics
• Milling Spindle Speed: Must be capable of reaching a maximum rotation speed of at least 60,000 RPM to process fine structures down to 100 µm.
• Mechanical Resolution: Must offer a minimum resolution of 0.47 µm (0.02 mil) in the X/Y axes and 0.2 µm in the
Z axis.
• Repeatability: Must maintain a repeatability/precision tolerance of ± 5 µm (± 0.2 mil).
• Tool Changing System: Must feature a fully automatic tool change mechanism capable of holding and cycling a minimum of 15 tools simultaneously without operator intervention.
• Milling Depth/Width Control: Must include sensor-controlled, automatic milling depth and width adjustment.
• Fiducial Recognition: Must incorporate an integrated camera system for automatic optical fiducial recognition, board alignment, and tool change monitoring.
2. Essential Physical Characteristics
• Maximum Layout/Working Area (X/Y/Z): Must be able to process boards up to at least 305 mm x 229 mm x 8 mm
(12" x 9" x 0.3").
• Maximum Material Size: Must physically accommodate substrates up to 330 mm x 250 mm x 26 mm (13" x 9.8" x
1").
• Base Construction: The machine must be built on a heavy granite (or equivalent high-density, vibration-dampening) base to ensure highest geometric accuracy and minimal resonance during 60,000 RPM operations.
• Workholding: Must include an integrated vacuum table system for securing flexible and rigid substrates during the milling process.
• Dispensing Capability: Must include or be capable of accepting a solder paste dispensing unit.
3. Operational & Software Requirements
• Software Integration: Must include integrated CAM/system software capable of importing standard CAD data, managing material parameter libraries, and providing step-by-step process guidance.
• Self-Cleaning: The spindle and milling depth sensor must feature pneumatic self-cleaning functionality to support low-maintenance operation.
