Questions and Answers

1. “The topics listed for instruction require a level of academic preparation in advanced math and physics unless only a cursory familiarization is desired. What is the academic and/or job preparation of the 40 students for the proposed class material? Do they have the necessary math and physics background/preparation?”

a. Almost all of the students have higher level science degrees.

b. We will work with any student who should fall behind at the end of each day

2. “40 students will limit the class to a strictly lecture style presentation. Does the command have any detection equipment available for display/demonstration during the class?”

a. Not at this time. All of our equipment is new and the warranty would become void if the equipment was not maintained in an operational state; therefore unavailable for display

3. “Does the command have assigned trainers that could act as assistant instructors?”

a. No

4. “Some type of practical exercise is needed to emphasize primary topics. Are PEs encouraged or even practicable?”

a. Practical exercises are not required but not discouraged.

b. With the amount of material we are commissioning for and along with the size of the class, perhaps homework quizzes and a quick review in the morning might provide the best use of our limited time

5. “Can you prioritize the listed topics in the order of emphasis? Some of these topics comprise an entire course of instruction.”

a. All topics are of equal importance to us

b. Recommend starting with radiation interactions followed by basic detector properties followed by all of the remaining material

6. “What is the end result capability desired by the command i.e., what should the student know, and be able to do upon completion of training?”

a. Due to the students varied science backgrounds, the end result is for all students to acquire a common understanding of radiation detection and measurement for AFTAC trainers to build from.

7. “Why the emphasis on reactor physics and neutron transport?”

a. The course should be based on Glenn F. Knoll’s Radiation Detection and Measurement 4th edition book.
