MEMORANDUM FOR 82 CONS/LGCA
FROM: 982 MXS/CC
SUBJECT: Statement of Needs for purchase request #F3V5L12138A001 for Two Stratasys
Fortus 900mc Systems, One Stratasys Fortus 360mc System, One Stratasys Fortus eT Upgrade for Titan
In accordance with agency objectives, 982 MXS/LGMX has a need to replace three outdated Stratasys Maxum Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) machines and update one
Stratasys Titan FDM. These machines will no longer manufactured or maintained by Statasys.
Two Stratasys Fortus 900mc Production Systems and one Stratasys Fortus 360mc Production
System will replace the three Maxum FDM machines. One Stratasys Fortus eT upgrade will be accomplished on the Titan FDM thus upgrading it to the same capabilities as a Fortus 400mc
Production System. 982 MXS/LGMX currently has Stratasys FDM machines in place and purchasing a substitute FDM would require additional parts, materials, sustainment contract and training.
Currently, larger projects are limited to a smaller, more restrictive build area and the parts must be built in segments. The larger build area dimensions of the Fortus Production System will allow larger projects to be accomplished with fewer builds. The Fortus Production System allows the upload and conversion of files in multiple formats which will reduce design time. The new FDM machines are required to meet our current and projected needs to manufacture prototypes and end item products. The FDM machines create no hazardous waste stream so they are environmentally safe and HAZMAT friendly. The ABS material used by these machines is all recyclable and everything else has been tested and is allowed to go directly into the sewer system. The replacement FDM machines are approved and funded for purchase from AETC/HQ as a FY12 Base Procured Investment Equipment submission.
982 MXS Trainer Development Flight serves a large internal and external DoD customer base. Because of the diversity and uniqueness of trainers and training aids requested by our end users the production system must meet specific criteria. In order to accommodate size requirements the production system build area must be 36”x24”x36” and 14”x10”x10”. Part production must be produced within an accuracy of +/- .0035 inch or +/- .0015 per inch, whichever is greater.
