WARNING

RADIATION HAZARD

X-Ray Radiation is harmful to personnel. Ensure compliance with all applicable Service Specific safety precautions set forth in S0420-AA-RAD- 010, T.O. 33B-1-1, or T.M. 1-1500-335-23, as applicable.

Failure to comply may result in injury or death to personnel.

9. INSPECTION EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS.

a. A minimum of 150 KVP x-ray system and have a 1.5mm focal spot or smaller.

b. Penetrameter materials refer to ASTM E1742.

c. Shims equaling total thickness of weld buildup placed on one (1) wall of tube or sheet. For tube butt-joint welds, the thickness of the shim is based on the weld thickness of a single wall.

d. Lead identification materials.

e. Lead cover plates are needed if multiple shots are to appear on one sheet of film or imaging plate.

Recommend two plates, each 8” x 8” x 0.25”.

f.Film radiography: Use Class 2 per T.O. 33B-1-1 / NAVAIR 01-1A-16-1 / TM 1-1500-335-23 (ASTM 1815, Class I) equivalent film, refer to Table 4. Sheets of film 8” x 10” are preferred if both exposures are to appear on the same sheet of film.

g. Computed radiography (CR): See Table 5 for approved CR systems, system settings, and imaging plates approved for welder certification inspection.

10. INSPECTION SETUP.

a. Tube butt joint welds.

(1) Use lead identification materials to identify each film or imaging plate to be traceable to the welder’s name, date welded, joint type, base metal, inspector’s name, date inspected or equivalent identification marking.

(2) Mark 1.0” tube circumference for double wall inspection in two shots, each centered 90° from the previous refer to Figure 5.

(3) Arrange tube head, welded sample, film or imaging plate, penetrameter, and shims per Figure 6.
