About this file

This document provides an addendum to soil sampling procedures for a federal contract opportunity with the Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The contract requires collection of mineral soil samples on subplots 3 and 4 in addition to subplot 2 according to the standard procedures in the 2022 and 2023 P2 Field Procedures documents. Samples should be collected from the 0-4 inch, 4-8 inch, and 8-12 inch layers on all three subplots, for a total potential of 12 soil layers. Additional labeling instructions are provided for samples from subplots 3 and 4. No data entry is required for samples from subplots 3 and 4.

EXHIBIT H - ADDENDUM TO SOIL COLLECTION PROCEDURES IN THE P2

FIELD PROCEDURES DOCUMENT (APPENDIX F in the 2022 P2 Field Procedures or Section 11 in the 2023 P2 Field Procedures ) – SOILS This document applies to all plots on the list (EXHIBIT F) tagged as “soils”

For this contract, collection of mineral soil samples will also be done on subplots 3 and 4. Figure F-1 on page 429 in the 2022 P2 Field Procedures or Figure 11-1 on page 279 in the 2023 P2 Field Procedures shows the location for all three subplots for soil samples.

The same procedures and rules apply to the added subplots for mineral soil sampling, such as: the sample must be in a Forested condition. Please refer to the entire Appendix F (2022) or Section 11 (2023) for complete instructions.

The soil sample location is Soil Visit #1 for all subplots.

On page 428 of the P2 Field Procedures Document (2022) or page 278 (Section 11.8) in the 2023 version is this paragraph stating the location for the soil sample:

Deeper Soil Sample

When possible, after obtaining the soil sample from the use of the Soil Corer (or Bulk Density Sampler) for the two mineral samples (0”- 4” and 4”- 8”), re-insert the Soil Corer back into the same hole and pound the sampler another 4 to 6 inches for a third layer (8”- 12”). The feasibility of obtaining the deeper sample might be informed by the difficulty level of driving the corer to obtain the upper samples and the characteristics of the 4 to 8-inch layer (e.g., large fraction of coarse fragments). After obtaining the deeper core, repeat the process of separating the upper 4 inches of that core as the 8 to 12-inch sample. Bag and label that sample as a third sample/layer appropriately. Any soil from beyond the 12-inch depth can be returned to the coring hole. This applies to all three subplots.

The full potential of the extended soil sampling procedure is 12 layers (FF, mineral 0-4”, 4-8”, and 8-12” at each of subplots 2, 3, and 4), as compared with the standard procedure of 5 layers (FF on subplots 2, 3, and 4, and mineral 0-4” and 4-8” only on subplot 2).

All other guidance in Appendix F (2022 P2 Field Procedures) or Section 11 (2023 P2 Field Procedures) (e.g., “Alternative Methods for Problem Soils”) apply.

There will be no data to enter into the PDR for the soil samples on subplots 3 and 4.

Snyder, Maryfaith - FS, UT This sentence only for new contracts. Will add “This document applies to all remaining Soils plots on the current contract.”

Labels for Added Mineral Soil Samples

On subplot 2, where mineral soil for the 8” – 12” sample, write “SOILS PLUS” on the top of the label and write in “Mineral 3”.

On subplots 3 and 4, write “SOILS PLUS” on the top of the labels and fill out as appropriate, writing in “Mineral 3” when collected.
