About this file
This document is a technical specification for reworking a prototype HB650 vacuum vessel for the PIP-II (Proton Improvement Plan-II) project, a partnership involving multiple international organizations including US-DOE, India-DAE, Italy-INFN, UK-STFC-UKRI, France-CEA/CNRS, and Poland's universities. The specification outlines detailed requirements for modifying an existing prototype vacuum vessel to match production unit specifications, including grinding and replacing various components such as extension ports, coupler supports, transportation interfaces, and magnet nests.
The procurement process requires bidders to provide a technical proposal demonstrating capability to deliver the modified vacuum vessel (F10196098 D) by December 2025, with a comprehensive set of requirements including welding standards (ASME B&PV sections VIII and IX), specific painting specifications (RAL9005 black and RAL3026 luminous red), and strict leak testing protocols (vacuum level < 1 x 10-3 mbar, leak rate < 2 x 10-7 mbar x Liter/sec). The document includes multiple hold points for Fermilab (FNAL) quality control reviews throughout the manufacturing process, with specific deliverables required at each stage, ranging from initial kick-off meeting to final shipping readiness review.

Several years ago, a prototype HB650 cryomodule was assembled and tested at Fermilab. This prototype cryomodule has been disassembled and we are planning to reuse some of the components for the assembly of one production cryomodule.
Introduction

Several years ago, a prototype vacuum vessel was procured and manufactured according to drawing package F10148048 Rev H.
From prototype to production, the design of the vacuum vessel has been changed.
We are now looking for a manufacturer to update by physically modifying certain parts of this existing prototype vessel to make it compatible with the production units:
drawing package F10196098 Rev D.

• During the assembly of the prototype vessel we had difficulty to assemble the strongback supports on the vessel. Tolerances have been changed, hardware has been changed and tolerances on the studs were not tight enough which led to more measurements during the assembly process. We would like to procure 14x new supports F10191095 and make sure it fits on the vessel.

Leak Check
4/25/202522
• Helium leak testing at room temperature shall be used to verify that assembly, subassemblies, and components (when specified on drawings) are suitably leak-tight at all stages of fabrication and assembly. The allowable leakage rates are indicated on drawings (when applicable). Leak testing should be performed with a calibrated Helium Mass Spectrometer Leak Detector (HMSLD), according to ISO 20485 or equivalent standard. Closures for the leak check will be provided.
• No painting (external or internal) is allowed before leak check is completed and approved.
• The completed Vacuum Vessel Assembly shall be made available to FFDG for inspection before, during, or after final leak checking (prior to painting). Advanced notice shall be provided to FFDG for travel arrangements.
• A final leak check shall be performed on the assembled vacuum vessel.
• After grinding the welds inside the vessel, sandblasting and painting with a rust preventative primer will be needed.
Internal Painting
4/25/202523
• After grinding the welds outside the vessel, welding new parts and performing final machining, sand blasting and painting is needed.
• Exterior to be painted with RAL9005 black jet and RAL3026 luminous bright red, refer to CAD model for components colors.
• Samples of the RAL3026 shall be provided and approved by FNAL before painting.
External Painting
4/25/202524
