About this file

This Request for Information (RFI) is issued by Fermilab for current regulated power supplies for the PIP II Beam Transfer Line. Fermilab seeks commercial off-the-shelf power supply solutions for five different circuit types: low voltage quadrupole, high voltage quadrupole, and septum power supplies. The power supplies must meet specific technical specifications, including voltage and current outputs ranging from 12-60 VDC and 160-1600 ADC, with 480 VAC input, air cooling, and strict regulation requirements. Additional requirements include EPICS-based control system compatibility, ethernet interface, adjustable feedback compensation, ground fault protection, rack mountability, and NRTL listing.

The procurement process includes a site acceptance test (SAT) for the first article, involving visual inspection, documentation review, device interface verification, and a 500-hour run test. Fermilab requests delivery and acceptance of all units within 26 weeks from the purchase order award. Potential vendors are asked to provide estimated pricing, delivery times, technical specifications, potential modification details, and quality control information. The power supplies will be used to energize normal conducting magnets in the PIP II Beam Transfer Line, which transports the beam from the PIP II Linac to the Booster, and will include 8 high voltage quadrupole circuits, 18 low voltage quadrupole circuits, and 1 septum supply.

1 INTRODUCTION

Fermilab is seeking a commercial off the shelf solution for inductive loads of various powers. The devices need to be commercial off the shelf items or a commercial off the shelf solution that would require minimal engineering changes to meet the power requirements outlined below. All responses to this RFI are requested to include:

• Estimated price per unit for the types and quantities listed in Section 2 o Companies may respond or not for contracts relating to each type of unit.

• Typical delivery time in weeks after award for quantities listed in Section 2

• Technical specifications of the units sufficient to demonstrate equivalence with

Specifications in Section 3 o If any modifications are required to meet FNAL specifications, please provide the basic technical information of the changes needed and estimated cost and schedule impacts for delivery.

o Of special interest to FNAL are the specifications on the unit’s controls interface.

• Brief description of the final QC checks done for each unit (fault protection verification, burn-in testing, etc.)

2 SCOPE

Configuration These power supplies will be used to energize normal conducting magnets in the PIP II Beam Transfer Line (BTL), which transports the beam from the PIP II Linac to the Booster.

The BTL consists of 8 high voltage quadrupole circuits, 18 low voltage quadrupole circuits, and 1 septum supply. We are seeking 5 separate types of power supplies, one type per circuit. For a unit to be considered it must have an external interlock system and be NRTL (or EU equivalent) rated.

3 SPECIFICATIONS

Low Voltage Quadrupole Power Supply

3.1 Output Voltage (quads) 20 VDC (LV Quad)

3.2 Output Current (quads) 160 ADC

3.3 Input Voltage 480 VAC, 60 Hz

3.4 Regulation including drift, ripple and set point 0.1%

3.5 Voltage Ripple (differential and common mode) <=0.1%

3.6 Maximum ambient operating temperature 40 °C

3.7 Cooling method Air cooled

High Voltage Quadrupole Power Supply

3.1 Output Voltage (quads) 60 VDC (HV Quad)

3.2 Output Current (quads) 160 ADC

3.3 Input Voltage 480 VAC, 60 Hz

3.4 Regulation including drift, ripple and set point 0.1%

3.5 Voltage Ripple (differential and common mode) <=0.1%

3.6 Maximum ambient operating temperature 40 °C

3.7 Cooling method Air cooled

Septum Power Supply

3.1 Output Voltage (septum) 12 VDC

3.2 Output Current (septum) 1600 ADC

3.5 Input Voltage 480 VAC, 60 Hz

3.6 Regulation including drift, ripple and set point 0.05%

3.7 Voltage Ripple (differential and common mode) <=0.1%

3.8 Maximum ambient operating temperature 40 °C

3.9 Cooling method Air cooled

4 General Requirements

4.1 Must have proven success running with an EPICS-based control system, preferably in other particle accelerator applications.

4.2 Must use ethernet for controls interface.

4.3 Must have adjustable feedback compensation that allows for operation on inductive loads. Time constants for this application range from 0.2 to 2 seconds.

4.4 Must have built in ground fault protection.

4.5 Must be rack mountable in Fermilab provided 19” racks.

4.6 Series and parallel configured systems must be constructed using all master units.

4.7 All AC line protection devices must be rated for 65 kAIC at 480 VAC.

4.8 Power supply units must have NRTL listing (or equivalent).

4.9 Units must provide an output status bit that is a normally open, dry contact or opto device that is held closed during normal operation (no faults). Failsafe polarity and not alarm mentality.

5 SAT Hold Point FNAL will perform a site acceptance test upon receipt of the first article unit(s). This test will include:

• Visual inspection

• As-built documentation review

• Device interface verification

• A 500hr run test.

The device interface approval is met when FNAL connects with to and controls the device through an EPICs interface. The 500hr run test is approved if the device meets the above requirements for 500hrs of uninterrupted running. SAT is expected to last 4 weeks for each SAT conducted.

For the production units we will test 10% of them for 500hr.

6 Timeline Expected contract milestones will include:

1. PO Award

2. Kickoff Meeting Held

3. Design Modification/Specification Approved by FNAL (if required)

4. Delivery of first article to FNAL for SAT

5. Completion of SAT by FNAL and approval for Production

6. Delivery of Production Units to FNAL

7. Production Units Acceptance Complete at FNAL

FNAL requests delivery and acceptance of all units in <26 weeks from PO Award. Bidders are requested to estimate their duration for:

• Time to delivery of first article to FNAL for SAT after PO award (in weeks)

• Time to delivery of all production units to FNAL after acceptance of first article (in weeks)
